I'm in CA and considering converting my carport to a garage. Right now it has a flat roof with comp (I bought it that way). I'm thinking of doing a simple 2/12 roof. It currently has 2 x 6 ceiling joists 24 oc. One wall is the exterior of the house and the other is 2 x 4s 16 oc. Can I make a simple rafter, using the ceiling joists as the base (either screwing the rafters onto the side of the joists or cutting them on an angle and top mounting them on the joists?) and maybe some triangular plywood at the ridge? Also I was told I only need to go every other joist, so a 48" distance? I'm going to use a comp roof. Suggestions? Drawings? Thanks in advance!
