Rafters or Sheet Rock?

I'm thinking I need new Sheetrock in my garage. I moved in about a year ago and now I have a little money to throw at my two car garage. I'm having a hard time deciding if I should sheet rock the ceiling or leave the rafters exposed. I like the finished look of the ceiling, but it handy to have the rafters to use. Opinions? Thanks all.

Tons of storage options for rafters just google garage rafter storage and then select images. I'd skip the rock myself

What type of climate do you live in? You can put your state in your profile to help answer. More info as to what your plans for your garage are. Will you just be parking in it and storing christmas decorations or do you use it as a shop and working in it. Will you be creating sawdust,etc?

Do you plan on insulating?
Do you have living space above?
Depending on the type of rafters you have they may not be rated for carrying a load across the bottom. Many risk it and get away with it while others, not so lucky.
It has become very popular to use metal on the ceiling. Think metal roofing or siding.

As previously mentioned, make sure the storage area above the ceiling joists can support the weight. Most early garages simply had 2 x 4 cross ties at 4' centers for holding the walls in place so the rafters could not settle and push out the side walls.
I once used my dbl. car garage for storage above the cross ties in the area above by using steel 1/8 x 1" flat bar nailed to the cross ties and rafters, thus transferring weight to the rafters above, which in turn spread a portion to the walls.
Drywall underneath would improve the overhead appearance, but you may wish to leave open access ports for reaching your stored items. Of course, the drywall weight above will subtract from the weight bearing ability of your ceiling.

Sorry guys. I'm new to this so I'm still figuring it out. I'm in California near Sacramento. Cold isn't too bad, but it gets pretty hot. The beams are 2x6 and look well supported. The house was built in 1973. I'll try and send some pics. It's going to be a working shop mostly for working on my old ford falcon, but also for any other projects I get into. I a little woodwork, but not much. Any idea on how much it would cost to get it "finished"(to the point where I can just paint)?
