So I am getting ready to build a garage it is going to be 16 foot wide by ??? 40ft or so.

I can only do 16 foot wide I do want to put storage in the attic I found trusses in a 9/12 pitch to match our house Not sure to do rafters or trusses

any suggestions?

I’ve never used trusses until my garage build and with a 28’ span had no choice. Way easier. Planning a 16-18x26 in the future and 100% doing trusses.

I would design a truss, for your 9:12 pitch and specify a 2x10 bottom chord for the insulation value if that's a thing for you.

You can always cost it out to purchased dimensional lumber too but the trusses will be very closely matched and go up fast without a bunch of cutting angles, as well as having the "no questions asked" Stamped Drawing for your inspector.

Joe,
I like rafters myself, because I work mostly by myself and I know how to cut and build a roof. It would take me 2-3 hours to cut them all and a full day to nail them up, so say 2 full days to be safe.

I've nothing against trusses, have built over 1300 roofs using rafters in my 20's, so used to then is all.
You'd be under $700 materials for 2x8 rafters, 24"oc , 2x10 ridge, with 2x10 ceiling joists. Priced the lumber in your town at H.D. online.

See layout pics below.

Also a Gambrel roof would help you with storage, but can you live with style to house?

It might be easier for me to do the rafters b self at least ai could cut them all on the ground and build them on the roof.

I like Gambrel better but it will be 10 foot to the side of our house so she wants it to match.

Thanks for the layout pictures that software looks cool
