Hello,
I searched for a title like this but i could not find anything. Iam sure this has been discussed many times on this forum. My main question is can i get more storage space with rafters vs trusses especially when i can only go with a 5/12 pitch over a 22x28 garage? If so can i get a single span rafter to clear 22 feet + 1 foot overhang on each side?

Thanks

Not unless you use engineered floor joists. Single joists would have to sit on a beam and overlap in the middle to span 22 feet, and I am sure you dont want a beam running down the middle of your garage. Get trusses built, with the storage access openings built in to them. Lot better way to go. You may want to kick up the pitch though, as a 5/12 will not give you much headroom in the storage area.. good luck and jmo

P.S. Not sure why you are choosing a 22 Ft wide garage, may be space limitations or funds ? From my experience, a true two car garage needs to be 24 ft. wide. You will miss that extra foot on ech side, and its cheaper to get while building it new. jmo 22' - 2x12's ?? wow, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ !!

Acording to this, a 2x12 #1 SYP 16" OC will span 21'4" at L/360 and 10psf DL 40psf LL. You really don't need L/360 for storage, you could get away with L/240 if you plan to drywall and L/180 if you don't. And 40psf LL is probably a little ridiculous for your attic space.
