Hey gang, looking for a little guidance. My GF and I are considering a driving visit to Portland and Seattle, bringing the dogs along for good company. While we hope to visit some of the cider makers and other fun things the PNW has to offer, I'm looking for a potential side diversion or two that might include a chance to grab some old tools, preferably of the woodworking variety, but all ideas are welcome. We are thinking of coming up in early to mid January, and I am wondering if there are any Swap Meets, Flea Markets, or other fun things that might only occur one weekend a month, that I might want to schedule my trip around. I know January isn't an ideal time to really hit the big events, but it is what the calendar presents to us.

Also, are there any don't miss locations for tools, like the famous Charlie's in Denver that we've all heard about? Are there any places I should stay out of, like your favorite hunting grounds?

I plan on poking through this thread to see who is still around. It's over on the noisy side, so didn't want to bump it too much

I will start checking CL for both states before we leave, just cuz you never know what you might trip up.

PNTC January meeting in WA on Jan 8 is on the look at list, but might require too much time and discipline.

And I do know of Powell's books, Pine State Biscuits, and a lot of bottle shops around Portland. But suggestions for other non tool things are cool too.

Thanks in advance.

Jan. is really too early for swap meets, etc. in the area. PNTC meetings are not open to the general public. You have to be a member or a guest of one.

But don’t they have reciprocal relations w the other clubs, EAIA, MWTCA, PAST, etc. I had previously read that when I was in Portland, and trying to line up my work week to a Hillsboro gathering.

I think they would let you in if you're a member of one of the other groups. PAST - Now there's a club that has really had a lot of problems.

I've only gone to one "swap meet" type event around here, and it was a farce. Nothing but table after table of overpriced Chinese garbage.
That's why I do most all my purchasing online, unless I see something interesting on Craigslist (which isn't very often.)
There is an old hardware store up in the north end of Seattle - not sure of the name or location - that is supposed to still have old inventory.
Most of the "antique" or "second hand" stores you are going to find along the I-5 corridor are going to be somewhat gentrified - or at least making an attempt at it - asking crazy prices for stuff that should be tossed in the trash.
That said, I did find a "C" series Craftsman 9/32" drive set at a used furniture store (of all places) for about half of what the last one went for on Ebay.
Maybe Provincial or bmwrd0 know of something happening south of here - I'm sorry I'm not much help.

obviously not. that was the "Star Lite" drive-in over on 84th & So. Tacoma Way - was a complete waste of time.
better off to cruise through junk shops in Aberdeen or Raymond.

I'll bet you are thinking of Hardwick and Sons in the U-district. I just used Google to bring up their address and learned that they closed the doors last year and moved to Idaho. Pisser. I'm on the other side of the sound, but did visit the store a few times over the years and it was a good one.

First of all, I loved hitting the Starlight when I was still doing business in SeaTac. But, so it goes.

Second, January is too early. About all you will find will be random Craigslist sales - hit or miss, mostly miss. And with the swaps being put on hold in many cases, it isn't a great time to be up here.

Third, TwoTowns Ciderhouse is about 10 miles from me, so let me know when you are heading up!

If you don’t mind, pick me up a Plomb Toolmobile while you are up there. I hear that they are common as dirt. You can drop it off on your way home.
But seriously, if you ever make it over to this side of the bay, I have a pretty nice large Craftsman Crown plane that I’m never going to do anything with and it’s getting in my way. It hasn’t even been in any evaporust yet so it is still retaining it’s full value.

RTM's a plane collector?

We used to go to Spanaway Speedway and watch them go around and around and around all night. That's all housing developments out there now clear up past Eatonville and down to Bucoda and Tenino. Go figure.

Will depend on how much room is left in the truck. I’m planning to grab on for me too. Is it safe to assume your price limit is about the same as mine, $50? ;)

thanks for the offer on the plane, but I have a small herd of #5 user planes that I am trying to thin. 7 in the user group, and not sure how many needing rehab right now. I once bought a box lot that had five, to get the one I wanted. My donation destination has dried up, I used to give the excess to a guy in Santa Cruz doing a kids program.

yup, tho collector is a bit of an upscale term. Hoarder or accumulator is probably more appropriate.
There are 200+ on site, varying from little 3” hobbyist planes up to 30” long woodies, 1/8” wide blades up to 2.5” or more. Many wooden molding planes from the 1830s forward, mostly simple shapes, not the fancy ovolos, etc.

A few, maybe 30, are modern production, post 2000, from Lie Nielsen, Lee Valley, Record, or small boutique makers, usually in shapes that were too pricey or delicate to buy used when I needed them. The majority are from before I was born, with a few from the 60s to 2000.

Only a few are collector quality, only one is worth ~$1k, the najority are in the sub $100 value range, most chosen as users.

That is also listed on FB marketplace and that ($7,000) is the reduced price, marked down from $17,000.

I just looked again and now it is only $1,275.

Yup, been and done. I prefer not to share details live, as I don't want to give away that I'm not home. Thanks for the prod to summarize this.

The raid is over, you can stop hiding all the Toolmobiles. Seriously, I looked behind 5 bushes, and under 4 or 5 rocks, and didn't see a single one. I think their availability has been over rated, or they were hidden while I was there. Case in point here.

We traveled from Jan 5 - 18, put 2500+ miles on the truck, visited Seattle, Orcas Island, Glenwood WA, Portland, and Grants Pass. We were traveling in my Tacoma, with two adults and two large dogs, and all the accessories needed for weather below freezing (didn't know it snowed in Glenwood, so we didn't have snowshoes), staying in hotels, and rustic campsites, so space was tight due the extras we don't normally carry. With the weird dates (Wed - Tue), we often lost track of which day of the week it was, so missed visiting a few places, due to not realizing it was a day they weren't open. (Ted's Tool Shack hit this category). We hit some nasty weather, some really heavy rain which closed the roads behind us, and knocked a few of our plans off track. We are used to walking in the rain with the dogs, but the rain closed a few events. There was also a Tsunami warning on the day we were going to visit the coast, so it was nice to know that they rolled out all the distractions they could to keep me away from Toolmobiles. Our itinerary was not fixed, we made half our reservations after we were en route. We made lots of stops, at Bakeries, Cideries, Wineries, Coffee Roaster, Tea Mongers, breakfast places, clothing stores, antique stores, one indoor flea, and a few garage / estate sales . Due to Covid and the dogs, we ate lots of meals in the truck, or in our lodging.

In the touristy side, we think Orcas Island was the best, stayed in a west end resort, little bitty cabin. Only bummer, it was off season, so most of the businesses were closed, with only a handwritten note on the door to tell you they were gone til February. Greatly reduced the options of where to eat or visit. But what views from Turtleback Mountain! And the Brown Bear Bakery, best baked breakfast goods on the trip. Unfortunately we missed a cider house right where the ferry docked, and they were closed for the rest of the week.

Bakeries yielded Brown Bear noted above, and a great bread bakery in Ashland. We ate lots of cinnamon rolls, scones and other fun pastries. Some of the scones were great, others raised the question: is this really a scone, or a biscuit?. Morning mochas came from a different place each day, with a few stellar ones, and a few that were highly rated that did not fit into my palette (usually roasteries). A few places also yielded Chai lattes, but I did not keep track of where our favorites came from in either category.

In the Cideries category, we visited Schilling in Portland and Seattle, 2 Towns, McMenamins Edgefield, Bauman's, and Cider Bite, as well as beverage stores. We brought home around 30 containers of cider. Tasted 4 or 5 different flights, chatted with lots of fun people. On the dog side, only one cidery did not allow them in, as it was a combination tasting room and production site, so that was understandable. But the others welcomed them on the patio.

Eating sort of ran the gamut, from really bad to really good. Two of the times we ate out were disasters, including one where my vegetarian GF got a beef soup when she ordered vegetarian, with a very poor recovery by their staff, and another where they realized they were out of my prime rib, right as her fish was ready. But other places welcomed us and the dogs, great food and great staffing. In between we hit a few areas where pub grub was the only food choice at our dining hours, but it was decent food and good staff. Places like Pikes Market were fun to grab a multitude of food.

On to the important stuff, tools etc. We managed to visit a few estate sales, mostly on the last day, so I picked up a handful of goodies cheap. The first day of one promising sale was pouring rain, and I was too lazy to get geared up after a long day of driving. We also hit a Parkrose Hardware (think OSH for the locals), where I bought a few containers of stuff that are currently not sold in California. Hippo Hardware yielded some fun vintage looking lamp cord, but its gotten quite pricey, I think I could buy a whole roll cheaper. It was fun to visit a Hardware store / public house combination, so little browsing while waiting for food things to get ready. Also grabbed a souvenir or two, again tool related. I enjoyed looking to see what special stuff is available for locals, like seeing hurricane bolts in Florida, as I wander through local hardware stores. Was hoping to find good winter weather proofed work gloves, but missed on them.

We didn't try to contact people to try to set up meetings or chats or swaps, as we were running so far behind plans each and every day. Sleeping until 9am gets addictive, and loading the trucks with help from the dogs can really slow down progress. Seriously, it was the dog's fault we were late, not the fact that we'd stop at 2 or 3 places to get coffee and breakfast.

That's pretty much it, still gathering the touristy scenic photos to be edited into a cohesive view.

Thanks to all who posted leads above, sorry I didn't hit many of them.

Just completed a bit more stealthy trip to Portland, telling only bmwrd0, hoping that all the Tool Mobiles wouldn’t be hidden away. That part of the plan didn’t completely work, as I found none.

Scored some goodies, as noted in the GS thread here. An infill plane was the best of that lot.

We drove up for a Cider Fest in a downtown park, a two day event Friday and Saturday. Only scheduled for 1/2” of rain on Friday, we thought we could survive that. Turns out we got almost an inch, and the worst of it came while we were walking back to our hotel. There were some tent shelters, and we used one as a camp, going out between the downpours. Our dogs were miserable, soaked to the skin. There was a golden retriever who stayed out in the rain, and kept rolling, since he wasn’t wet enough . When we finally left, the field was a soggy mess.

The next day when we arrived the soggy mess had turned to a muddy mess. We continued on, and my avatar dog decided to roll in that mud the first five minutes we were there. We continued our tasting and chatting with the vendors, trying to stay dry.

We managed to score 60+ containers of hard cider, stopping at grocery stores, tasting rooms, cider houses etc.

All in all a good trip, except for the rain. And no Tool Mobiles.

Drove past on 5 on the way in and out, saw the big arching sign. One of these times we will have plenty of time to plan to visit, maybe convince some folks to gather for coffee or tool hunting.
