Rain gutter ?

I have a house with shingled roof. Its not super insulated and expect some ice. Am I screwed to use rain gutters. I take it they cant be installed where there are icicles.

No that is wrong. Of course they can't be installed while there is ice there but they can be installed on your roof facia. Do make sure that when installed the better snap in and screw hangers are used and not just spike and ferral. They are true junk.

if the gutters are operating correctly, there shouldn't be much water in there to freeze... But I'm also in Washington where we rarely get much snow/ice

If you aren't getting ice dams now the gutters won't hurt at all and if pitched correctly and kept clean they should not hold water either.

In fact they should keep icicles from forming.

Ok, I hadn't i had there and don't know how much ic5. e it gets. In a new foot house I can see where they may not be an issue but didn't know how they handl ice formingphone screen, no glasses.

I was doing this from a tiny phone screen without any glasses. I figured the whole place would be full of gutter experts.

Yes you can use gutters. Ice damming is a possibility and for the more severe ares, some attach heat trace tape to their gutters.

Theoretically, you will have less icicles with gutters installed. If they form and attach to your gutters, knock them off so carefully they don't get ripped off.

A roof rake is the cheapest solution to prevent them. Get it out of the valleys and off of the eaves. Heat trace is the easiest way to prevent them from happening without doing anything, but I think it's ugly.

sberry, I live in Erie Pa. and we get quite a bit of snow here. Most of the homes here use 2X6 for rafters so they are not well insulated and ice on the eaves is a common problem. The gutters will fill and freeze but as long as they are properly installed you should not have any issues. Pay a bit extra for the "Big Ice" installation. The contractor will place the hangers on the ends of the rafter tails instead of randomly on the fascia. Do not let them tuck the gutter up under the drip edge as this will allow ice to push up under the drip edge easier if your gutter fills with ice.
