Raised bed thoughts?

I did mine out of rough sawn 2x10 spruce from the sawmill. Lined it with newspaper so the water could perk through but the bottom would stay moist. Newspapers also keep weeds from growing up through the bottom

I've been planning on this myself, so I'm happy to see what others have come up with. Staying away from PT myself, but then again I've got a bunch of leftover cedar 1x4s from a fence project that are currently taking up precious space in the garage...

We've raised bed gardened for 20+ years. I build the beds out of Doug fir 2x12's. They have been good for 7ish years. I replaced some this year that were 8 years old and changed the construction a bit. I was just screwing the 2x's together previously. This time I added Doug fir 4x4's in the corners of the new ones. Seems the corners are always the first to fail. I also sealed all the end grain. We shall see if that makes any difference. I use heavy mil plastic in-between the beds with cedar mulch. Has worked out very well for us.

I like the trough idea. I may get a couple of these and start preparing my soil this fall for next year. (Grass clippings/leaves/ashes.)

I considered making raised beds out of wood but thought of something different. My next door neighbor is an underground contractor, so I thought concrete pipe. He had some surplus 48" dia pipe in 24" (or 30", I don't remember) sections so he brought them over. So far it's worked well for winter and spring vegetables, but for some reason the summer (central valley CA) stuff struggles. I'm not blaming the planters.....

They have been named the "missile silos". I bought some spray can concrete stain but never got around to staining them.

These won't rust, rot, fall over, be damaged by yard equipment, blow over in the wind, float away in a flood, attract termites, catch fire, etc.....

Shade cloth. If I didnt use it here in Texas 100+ degree days everything would be dead in short order. Get at least 40%(blocks 40% of the light, lets 60% through). Usually have to order it online. The stuff sold at Home Depot/Lowes type stores is usually 90%+ because its designed for patio's and awnings.

you can build a pvc pipe frame for pretty cheap. You could use 3 or 4 uprights driven into the soil, T's off of that, and then form a circle with more pvc between the T's on the uprights. Stretch the shade cloth over that.

OR you could make a setup to cover your whole gravel area pretty easily as well.

Those are pretty sweet. Will outlast all of us for sure.
