Anybody have any knowledge of these old engine hoists / shop cranes? I picked one up recently and I don't see any markings as to the lift capacity. My main concern is what the lift capacity is when the boom is fully extended. Also, does anybody know how far the boom can be extended, since it has no stop? It will slide all the way out of the main tube. I can see that the extension tube has been slightly crushed by the locking bolt when the tube has been fully extended and weight put on it. Is this a safe practice?

I was thinking of drilling a hole through the main tube and the extension at full extension so I can put a bolt through it and lock it in place.

Any information would be appreciated. I looked online, but couldn't find much info on these. They look the same as the Carolina Shophand 5000- I assume they are just rebadged for different companies. The only thing that came up were auction listings.

Dunno how accurate it is, but I read somewhere it's 2T. Looks really short in the pics I've seen. I don't know how that rating is determined, as I have bent a boom on one and destroyed the crossmember picking, er, attempting to pick up a 3500# lathe, and it's rated at 2T. I'd guess that's based solely on the ram used and the leverage of the boom. If the members are 3" tall, I'd guess a 2T rating to ok. YMMV.

The rating is dependent on the amount of extension of the boom. Most of these are advertised for the rating with the boom fully retracted. The capacity drops quickly as the boom extends. For instance, the Harbor Freight hoist is rated for 2 tons at 42" extension, but only 1/2 ton at 63-1/2".
