The cheapest shock in general should be okay then. There are tons of generic shocks/struts all over ebay for cheap that should be ok until you get rid of the car and then become someone else's problem.

It will go to be junkyard- problem is it's a 97 Camry with a great engine and just needs tires and shocks? To spend or not to spend....

Thanks for the advice.

For grins I went on 4wheelparts.com and priced out 4 shocks for a 2000 F350 4x4:

Bilstein 5100 - $280
Rancho 5000 - $203
Rancho 9000 - $443

No way I in hell I would pay $443 for a set of Rancho shocks.

I was looking at some 5100's for all 4 corners for my 2007 F150 and the lowest price I've found them for is at shock warehouse.com. Thanks for the heads up on 4wheelparts, I'll go over there and take a look.

IIRC I paid around $400 ($380 I think it was) for 4 shocks for my GMC half ton.

IMO if I was replacing the struts for this car.
Best: Bilstein
Good: KYB
Adequate: Monroe

Nah, there's a difference between consumer feedback & blind brand loyalty. I tend to be a Ford guy but like GM and would own a Dodge if the right deal came along. They ALL do dumb ****. I drive a V10 right now and don't mind it but I'll be the first to tell you it's "impressively unimpressive" as I've said here before. And I do think the modular motors have some major design flaws. GM's far from perfect too, just in other ways (wife has '05).

Guys who just blindly hate Ford or GM, etc I avoid. But those who can articulate their concerns I listen to.

If there were no validity in consumer feedback we can just delete this board right now. No need to discuss a Neiko vs Tekton or GW vs SK. Ditto for eBay feedback and Amazon reviews.

The purpose of my post was to display that, no matter what it is, there are people who will say it's junk, regardless of what it is, or the brand. And usually, they don't have much real personal experience or expertise to validate their opinion.

I'm very familiar with Rancho. Or better stated, WAS familiar with Rancho, before they were purchased by Monroe. Back in the 80's, I managed a reputable four wheel drive shop on the east coast, and we were factory-direct with Rancho. Sold and installed about 6-8 sets of them daily for several years. Can't quite recall the exact series back then (I think it was the 5000 and 7000), but it was way before the current models they offer today. That was also the era of the Rugged Trails, TrailMasters, Skyjackers and Heckethorns. They pretty much all had the same series (hydros and nitros), just different decals. Of course, the Rugged Trails were the zinc-cadmium coating.
