range extension cord

I have a new GE stove and it stinks. Washed it down and ran it multiple times probably close to 15 hours now. Still stinks, wrecks the whole house. My plan is to drag it on to the deck and try running it a few days out there.

I think this cord will work but before I fry something figured I'd ask. It seems they don't recommend extension cords for ranges but this will just be temporary. 4 prong 50 amp rv extension cord 25ft

Assuming you have a 4 prong range receptacle it will be fine.

They say not for stoves since they are normally a permanent location. They don't want the cord to be permanent.

Run the self clean cycle to get the smell out. Just one time should do it. The smell is the glue that holds the fiberglass together during stove assembly. Until you run the self clean the glue just keeps on smelling. Ran into this often as a GE tech. Pick a day when you can leave the windows open and run a fan. All stoves do that not just GE stoves as they just about all use the same insulation.

Ya looks like all brands could have the issue. This one just seems excessive. I'll through it on the porch and try the self clean.

We had trouble with our stove on self clean. Things got too hot and some plastic cracked. We repaired it and never plan to run the self clean cycle again. Might want to try just running it on highest normal setting. BTW it's a Dacor. Supposed to be high end. Will never buy another one.

IMHO, you can use an extension cord to test operate you range. The cord must be appropriately sized for the job.

I build a 50 Amp cord for my Arc Welder, it is 20 feet long.

Since GE is owned by Haier I won't buy them. With Haier, any day the appliance still works beyond the warranty expiration date is a bonus day.


If the OP's range is 4-wire, a 50A RV extension cord would work, but doubt it would be worth the cost.

I'm not an electrician, but if it was truly temporary, I'd run to Home Depot and buy 6 gage wire (I assume that's big enough since that is what the "rated" extension cord uses). Just plain wire, not jacketed.

Remove the power cord from the range. Cut the wire into four equal lengths. Splice the four wires to the power cord at the "plug" end. Wire the wires to the range at the "range" end.

Yes it's "jury rigged". Yes you need to be sure the wires won't chaffe. Yes you need to be careful and watch it and not let the kids run around it, etc.

Yes you have, Haier is still the pond scum of appliances, but can add Magic Cheap and a few others too.

If it was temporary and your only running the oven I would use #10 or #12 even.

Even for a permanent install I don't hardly ever run #6 to a stove. #8nm on a 40A is all I do.

Appreciate all the advise

Ran the oven for 5 more hours outside with the RV cord still smelled. Ran the self clean for 4 hours and really improved. Then ran it again at the full 5 hour self clean and now it's normal now. Glad I don't need to buy a new one or complain to the builder, it came with a new house.
