I'm honestly not quite sure who makes this vise, but it's very old and I don't think it's ever even been mounted. I've only ever seen two other vises with "British Make" on the side, but none with this model number and none of them had a maker mark.

Not sure how rare these are, but I haven't seen one before, and I'm a tool nerd.

A buddy dropped this off at my shop last week after picking it up at a garage sale. He gave them $80 of their $100 asking. The thing is pretty much brand new. No dinks anywhere, the paint is in great shape, and the handle is straight.

It rotates, which is cool, has pipe jaws and an interesting drilling attachment that goes in a groove in the jaws.

dr clyde,

Those Cole Vises are actually somewhat common out here in SoCal. IIRC, Cole was from the LA area, so that makes sense.

I have the Vise, and my buddy had the drill. I've seen maybe 3 or 4 of the vises in the wild around here.

I assume that vise is a play off a blacksmith post vise style. Just not as heavy duty as there is no post...but maybe I'm totally off on that assumption...

Strangely, I have a couple of the drills, but no vise. If anyone needs a drill to complete their vise, let me know.

It's for sure not as heavy duty as a true post vise, but the rotation and pipe jaws should be handy for holding odd shapes on the welding table.

There should be a hole in the bottom so a bar can be inserted to use it as a "giant pipe wrench". Their words, not mine.

I would imagine, that with the right length bar, you could also make a post vise out of it.

Have to be this Jacobson for me. Haven't seen many around like this one.

Interesting vise. It appears to be a J R Long patent, number 667,152. Long was a prolific inventor, who was also responsible for the Wil-Burt Versa Vise and the Columbian Gyro Vise. Along with some wrench patents, I have found 28 of his various patents so far.

My round slide Prentiss “Bingham Anchor”. The one on the right of the ad. Only one I’ve ever seen.

I don't know. I'd sure love to find out though. I still have it sitting under my workbench - haven't had time to clean it up and re-oil it just yet. I don't intend to refinish it, I'm just going to do a linseed oil treatment over the original finish. I honestly don't believe it's ever been used.

I think the rarest one I've had is Charles Parker 995.

Currently I'm happy to have these Craftsman 0519x :)

I love the vintage look of this vise.
Is the lettering highlighted in gold?

Yes, i cleaned it up only using a wire wheel then coated it with Boiled linseed oil, then Highlighted the lettering in gold because i figured it might stand out the best.
This is how it looked before and after.

I would just wipe it down with WD40 or similar after taking it apart. It will dry out and not be greasy but take the dirt off. Put some oil on the screw and nut and leave it at that. If you keep it where rust will be a problem consider boiled linseed oil.
VERY nice vise !

It will give you a coating that will help keep the rust off of it and still keep the old patina look. In cooler weather it will take a while to dry. I wouldn't put it on the inside of the rotating parts as it is a bit tacky even when dry. If you use it put thin coats on and wipe down good in between. A thick coat will be gummy a long time. It is refered to as BLO on most of the vise threads. There are many more favorite rust preventitives if you research a bit.
