On this quick release square drive:

The button presses a shaft against a coil spring.
That shaft is notched at one side for the ball.

Is it always notched on one side only? The button spins, which is why I ask.

The button end is retained by a ring that's pressed in(?)

The square end is closed on this one. It's a 1/2" GW IIRC from Cripe.

Anyone else ever take one apart that far? If the square end were open, I'd go ahead and try to press from that side.

Or, are there threads on here with dimensions of others?

I'm wanting to build a very custom ratchet, but before I delve into the SO project, I'd like to build a couple cheapies.

That button is probably grooved for he ball detent, not notched, or it pushes against another separate part that is notched, to decouple them...
