Hi

Here is a photo off the net , lets say your ratchet strap has 15 ft of strap and you only use 5 feet of it ,

How do you store the extra so it looks "neat" and is not flapping in the wind ?

Is there a strap or a big rubber band you can put around the access ?

What do you use ? Thanks for your ideas

loop it and tie it to the used portion. Or if it's in the bed of a truck just....let it be

For my straps that are always too long, I shortened them. The remaining tail gets folded up and tucked into the buckle. I've never had one get lose while doing that

First of all, I would not use a strap like the person the picture did.

No issue with that type of strap but how it's being used.

It was just a picture I grabbed off Google.....

I caught that and it's why I didn't say the OP, just the person who used the strap.

Depending on how much I have left, I'll do a simple overhand knot, feeding the strap down through the ratchet handle.

My 27' straps for the JD, I simple roll them up and tuck them under the strap where the hook is clipped into the D-ring.

Can't believe no one has mentioned there's a tool for that.

Butterfly the end of the strap and wrap it off next to the ratchet. Also good for storing the straps.

Ever take one of those things off and have it flip around letting the ball hit you in the knuckles ?

Beat me to it! I order them from AliExpress, 20 for $10 shipped to my door. They’re way better than the Harbor Freight versions that lose their elasticity in about a month.

Roll extra and use Nite-Ize Gear-Tie in the 18-in flavor ($4 @ Lowes). Attach to the load strand.

I was taught different than the vid. If I were a cool YT'er I guess I'd make my own vid. I'm not that cool.

1. Pull strap straight out from trailer, then start folding it over itself, 18-24" is good
2. When you get to strap handle, take your folded section and turn it 90 such that an oval is facing you -- left side of "O" in your left hand, right in your right hand.
3. Open the ratchet handle partially and feed the top of the "O" into the handle. Pull the top down and back through the bottom of the "O"
4. Pull it through as tightly as you can, now click the ratchet handle closed, being sure no strap material is obstructing the locking tooth on the left or right that keeps it clicked shut

This works on any strap with a decent enough handle to have room to pass it through. Some 1" mechanisms are tricky but I regularly do it with some 1.25" straps I have.

Finished product shown. Tuck tail into bump rail if applicable, but not necessary.

Have been doing this since 2009 without incident.

I roll up the tail in a nice big loop, and pull it back through itself on the strap above the ratchet, tuck the excess into the handle of the ratchet.

Started doing this when driving a delivery truck back in the 90’s, one of my coworkers showed me. I’ve never lost a strap or had one come unstowed since.

I keep a few short pieces of this in the same tote as straps;

https://www.harborfreight.com/3-4-quarter-inch-x-35-ft-roll-hook-and-loop-cable-strap-96215.html

If you wrap the excess strap around all 4 fingers, a single 6-8" piece of velchro (wrapped as tight around the middle of the bundled up strap as you can get it) keeps it together pretty well.

If I forget to keep the velchro in the strap tote, I resort to one or all the above methods :=) ... Steve

Coincidentally, I was in a surplus store today and they had bundles for .69. Big spender, I bought two bundles.

I use some double sided velcro on my stuff (soft side to the strap). Works well for storage too and keeps things bound up snuggly. None have ever come loose in the wind, snow, rain,or ice. Coming from the USAF logistics world, half hitches were the norm on most of what we transported with straps, regardless of how much slack you had. Worked and was easy to undo when needed. I still do that on short trips and never an issue of the m coming loose in the wind.

Don't ask.
Anybody else just staple a dollar to the end and watch the old guys try and grab it?

I just roll it in a loop and pull the strap through. Almost like in the video.

The problem with this is the application. For securing a tire like that you use a laso strap and they are typically 8 or 10 feet. Also the d ring should be centered with the axle on the edge of the trailer

I try to use straps that are the correct length. I use mostly 12 foot straps and the 27 footers rarely get used

By using the correct length strap you can simply tie up the excess if not it is rolled up into about a 1 foot diameter circle and wired to the existing strap with tie wire.

All machinery is secured with chains and binders and not straps

My boat transom straps came with a little Velcro deal sewn onto the strap end at 90 degrees to tie up the loose tail.

Works pretty good.

Don’t know who made them, but they had the dealers logo sewn in.

Depends on how much is left over but either tie a knot or usually wrap it & zip tie.

If it seems like straps are doing the same task & always too long no shame in cutting them. I've got a few that are hacked, those are the shorties.

Chopped another one couple months ago. It's holding my deck railing together until I get around to repairing the winter storm damage from a large branch. Got sick of the tail flopping around.

What I'm terrible at is storage. Seems like whenever I'm done with a strap I chuck it back in the box & it's a tangled mess next time I need one.

I use ratchet straps that have a loop of webbing between the ratchet and the hook end. When I'm strapping something down I ratchet once to secure the strap while keeping it somewhat slack. The I loop the excess strap and feed it through the loop between ratchet & end hook. Then I finish tightening the strap which secures the excess just below the ratchet.

Hope that's clear as mud!

See attached photo. :)

I use the ratchet straps for a specific job, cut to that length, and save the tails> went to Ace Hardware and got a Buckle latch for the 1@1/2" and the 2" straps, just thread them thru and roll it up, when needed just unroll and strap things like coolers or chairs, just pull the tails tight.

Hi
Thanks for all your ideas , there were some products I never knew about ,

The problem with cutting them is the next time I need them it may need to go over the top ofsomething and I would need it long compared to connecting to a car axle .

Not always hauling the same stuff !

I've had them come loose and flap in the wind. It can cause damage.

For the past few years, I always carry 18 inch zip ties. Roll up the end and zip tie to the strap.
