ratchet troubles

ok guys heres the deal, i have several ratchets id like to rebuild or have rebuilt whichever works out.

snap on
f710B needs rebuild, cover plate,screws, the works basicly
f710 needs rebuild,has chipped gear and is older so i would like to go through it.

armstrong
11-906 needs a cover plate, gear stripped, new screws.


i gave my snappy ratchets to the snap on man and got nothing, im unsure if he forgot them and never did them or what, he told me they were ready to go. they are not ready to go what soever.

so ive looked online and can't be sure what all comes with the snap on kits, looks like you have to order things by the piece?


the armstrong weve had for years and the screws have stripped and the cover plate doesn't hold. so its time for a rebuild or whatever needs doing.

id like to get these back into good condtion and they are very useable other wise. i have other ratchets so these don't get used all the time anyway.

i sent a message to armstrong tonight about that one, but unsure if that will get me anywhere.

but what all comes with the kits? do they include screws and faceplate? see im unsure what all comes with the kit.

I've never seen a rebuild kit for an older snap-on ratchet but the dual 80 kits include everything.

from the website it seems depending on the ratchet you get differn't things. thats why im wondering. i don't want to lose these due to sending them in or something like that.

Hey those old snappys are 20 tooth and I have found that the rebuild kits are not made anymore as of around 2008 or so. So it may be tough getting a rebuild.

they list kits on the website though? hmmm i think tomorrow i may need to call snap on and see what is going on for sure.


you know id never think these ratchets were such low count in the teeth, they feel very nice when they work, i always grease my stuff when i get it. thats how i found out how bad these were.

i just looked on ebay and found a kit that covers a f720 and so on. it doesn't come with a cover plate but does come with the screws.

so maybe that is how they all are for these type?

When I ordered a 720 kit it came with everything but the cover plate. Came with the snap on emblem insert though. I think that's how it is for all of them.

^ from what ive gathered either ebay, or a good store, not all will hand them out i think.

others may have better luck but thats what ive seen from stories and my experiance.

Warranty service is the main negative of Armstrong and other Apex brands, IMO.

Give Apex a call and see what they say. They'll probably tell you to take it to Fastenal, which is what they told me to do. Fastenal didn't really know how to handle it at first, but I got it taken care of after a couple weeks.

The Armstrong Maxx locking flex ratchets are super nice, though. Mine has proved to be very strong, so I'm actually not worried about breaking it. The one that was broken was the old 36 tooth design.

the fastenal here says they don't do much with armstrong, ill try them this week. ive asked them about it before but i was never given much to make me want to try to hard.

Older ratchets can be hit and miss. It all depends on what the PMTs have hoarded.

I bought a PMTs tool chest from a Sears that got shuttered the beginning of the year that had about 100 rebuild kits in it, lots of NOS stuff that is no longer being made. Unfortunately one that I needed wasn't in his stock pile but I did eventually find one at another Sears that stayed open.

That particular PMT was extremely good at his job, trying to help customers with their needs, unlike what constantly gets regurgitated here.

Snap-on rebuild kit includes:

1. Gear
2. Pawl
3. Spring
4. Ball
5. Reverse Lever
6. Screws
7. Seals (if applicable)

The kit does NOT come with the cover plate and they are no longer available. If you order a kit, make sure you order the SPP744 service tool along with it.

finally got back to this, i called snap on this morning. she said they don't have cover plates for these ratchets as they are discontinued. i only needed a repair kit for one and the cover plate and so on for the other. but she said she would send out ratchets and replace both so i guess im getting new ones.

she said she will send out new ratchets to me and to keep the old ones.

i would really like to fix these if anyone has any spare parts or knows of someone. please let me know.

i went to fastenal today, took in my armstrong ratchet that has stripped gears and bad screws.


i bought some salt, and they said they were going to call armstrong and let me know what happens. i leave, and about a half hour later i get a call and they told me my new ratchet would be in tomorrow.


im impressed, service and no hassle just want i always wanted.

ok so now i have three shiny new ratchets. gave one of the snap on ones to my dad so he had a standard dual 80 and the long one i gave him.

I too have an armstrong that needs a kit, fastenal here said "they don't handle them any more but if I had paperwork showing I bought it there they could do 'something'" I didnt think any of these brands we are talking about,needed paperwork for warranty...
even though I offered to buy the kit. There was a guy on here offering free kits for Armstrong for the price of shipping (year old thread or so) I revived the thread last nite and also PMd him; he does not have the particular kit that I need

only problem (may) be that I think he is in jolly old England, IDK what shipping might cost, to get back to this side of the pond

what i find sad is i never heard from armstrong directly. but i am really suprised at how easy our fastenal took care of my problem.
