does the handle and shank/bitholder interchange between brands?

i'm planning to get SO for just the handle as I already have shanks and bits from other brands.

Yes, AFAIK any 1/4" drive should work in the handles.

Some use 1/4" square while others use 1/4" hex drives. Gearwrench handles accept a 1/4" square male shank, but they offer an adapter shank to accept 1/4" hex. I think Wera handles accept 1/4" hex, but they offer a number of adapters for other drive shapes & sizes.
