These used to be about $30 for the set. It appears that just about all Sears Outlet store have them in stock. These are by no means a must have tool but they can come in handy in some tight spots.

Not to derail this thread too badly, but what are some of the instances in which you've used these? I have seen them many times at the outlet near my house, but I've never been able to figure out when or why I would use them.

I went searching for them months ago, pretty sure they're all gone- no longer on Sears/Sears Outlet sites. Both outlet stores in town have had the SAE sets since at least January though.

I've got a set of metric and standard available if anyone is interested. They're brand new. Just PM me.

Metric Set Sold. SAE still available.

My local Sears searched every store in the country for me on their inner network. They also contacted purchasing with no luck.

To me I see two potential uses:
  1. When need a ratchet in a narrow spot but also can't access the fastener from the side.
  2. They allow you to use your ratcheting wrenches without them sliding off of the fasetner. (Ratcheting wrenches are difficult to keep on bolts heads that are not up against the item being clamped onto.

There are numerous other tools/ways to address these problems so these are one more option. Clearly the demand was not strong enough to keep them in production so their use is limited. I would not have paid $30 but for $10 they may come in handy some day.

I have a metric set but I have not see any in stores in a long time. I don't remember when/where I bought the metric set but knowing me I would not have bought it if I had not gotten a deal.

I'm thinking about installing these on my ratcheting wrenches as a default to see how I like them when they become the default.

Can't the same thing be accomplished with the max access sets now?

Also you can use the other socket caps that go in your standard sockets. I have the 1/4 3/8 and 1/2 sizes and have used them rarely. Although these posted here would be about 1/4 less tall than using the inserts.

I use max access or the Snap-On low profile 1/4" ratchet set. I also have that set of 3 square adapters bought a long time ago but never used them.

These are thinner than the max axess sockets.

I have sets of these that came in a large set. They're the thinnest option I've found, outside of just a wrench. I kept them just in case, but don't think I've needed them yet.

Yes & Yes.

These are just one way to accomplish something and there are other options that do the same thing. Due to the infrequent use but occasional need of any of these tools, I feel these are a good deal at $11.

you need the harbor freight low profile ratchet. they make a long flex version as well. some say they are weak, but ive had good luck with mine. works good for real tight spot.

Apples to oranges really, because even with one of those ratchets you're sockets are much taller than the ones in the OP.

For the couple people that have the metric set, what's the item number for the set? I've had the SAE Set for a while now and it's lonely, haha.

Thanks. I'll certainly post up if I eventually find anything. I'm adding this to my "unicorn" list that I search for when I get bored.

Looks like the 10, 12, 13, and 18mm are available as singles through sears.com still. $4.49ea at the moment.

Set contains 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18mm. Individual part numbers are 42070 to 42077

They give a lower profile than a low pro socket on a slim/low-pro ratchet. As some have posted, it's an even lower profile than a Gearratchet vortex/craftsman max axxess type socket.

I have a set, just because it was included in a larger set I bought. I have used them a time or two and they were handy, but they're not must-haves for anything I have seen or can think of. The metric set is annoying. It has some irrational size skips in it. The metric set which is counterpart to the SAE set that goes from 5/16" to 3/4" without skipping sizes should, accordingly, go from 8mm to 19mm without skipping sizes. Skipping 9mm is one possibly forgivable exception, but sizes from 10mm to 19mm really must include every increment for a set to be considered "complete".

Bump for those who may be interested.

The standard set is down to $5.99 at Sears Outlet, and the hard to find metric set has been popping up on eBay lately. I picked up the latter for $25 Best Offer. I would have gone lower but I wasn't sure how many they had.

Standard (42800)
Metric (42801)

I see my original post has been bummped up today.

After having things for quite a while, I have found that I like them greatly. I just leave each of them installed in each ratcheting wrench I have. Most of the time I'm happier having them in there than than not having them there. They work like an extremely low profile ratchet. If I need the pass through function I just pop them out. I find I leave them in 90% of the time.

The key to loving these is to leave them in all of the time and only pop them out when you don't need them.

I ordered a couple SAE sets from a fairly local outlet and ended up having one defective socket in the first package I opened that had a socket missing the ball indent. So now I am going to end up making the trip to the store anyhow to swap it.

I do like the design and plan to keep an eye out for a metric set.

These might be nice if you don't already have a pass-through ratchet set like the Max Axess, but if you already have one of those sets, you don't need this.

This set has the big disadvantage of not being pass-through, so you can't insert a hex key to tighten something while you are using the socket on a bolt.

I didn't buy, just put in the cart, but you can get the sae shipped to you for 5.99, so 11.98. That's the old clearance price.

As mentioned several posts up, these are thinner than even a Max Axxes socket. While you probably will never "need" that extra clearance, these do have some advantage. I have sets of both, and felt these were worth keeping just in case.
