Ratcheting wrenches

I'm looking for suggestions on ratcheting wrenches. I have a set of Snap On flat SAE and a set of Matco offset metrics, but they're the old style bulky wrenches. I want something reversible. I don't know if I want combination or box end, and don't need to pay Snap On prices but I don't want junk.

I have standard gear wrenches, metric mac tools ratcheting and black hawk metric wrenches. They are all good but generally i grab for my gear wrenches first.

Autozone gearwrench. Once a month they have them 50% off. Reversable Chinese lobster claw but the ratcheting end is good

Combination ratcheting wrenches don't even make sense, the whole point of any combination wrench is that you break with the box end, and use the open or ratcheting end afterwards for speed.

If you get a combination ratcheting wrench, then you are left with the ratcheting end to use for your breaking of fasteners, and that will quickly break your ratcheting wrench!

I suggest get cheap ones or spend good money on a good set. From what I read on here most of the middle of the line brands are made by the same manufacturer but not all of them. Someone will shortly post which are made by who. I suggest if you do not depend on them buy cheap and when it breaks, buy a better one if you want something better.

Here are my suggestions, because I do not like poor quality tools.
1 Snap-on flank drive plus expensive but you can use the open end to break bolts, they can leave bite marks though.

2 Snap-On double box with one ratcheting end great for breaking bolts free and cranking away for speed.

3 EZ-Red also made by another company double ratcheting box, reversible, locking flex, one side offset. These are long flex ratchets great for hard to reach areas that could use some speed. (I do not have these yet, but I have gotten my hands on them, I will get these after I move)

4 Stubby Blue Point reversible flex for those tight spots.

5 Best ratcheting action- meaning most work performed with same amount of swing (I measured). Craftsman professional reversible. From what people have posted on here these can still be gotten under the craftsman industrial name, still US made.

I would give Carlyle available at NAPA a shot. The deal with 20% off the gear wrench is a good deal. I have borrowed some Blackhawks which were good for the brief time I used them.

There many options, I would also give SK a shot if they make ratcheting wrenches I do not know about SK.

I believe Proto makes a nice spline set too. I will end up getting these also. Another company sells them under a different name essentially the same wrench.

Good luck there are a good amount of options.

If you do not want to spend a lot and you have time, keep your eye out for a deal. Almost all brands have a sale at some point. Some prices are negotiable. Good luck.

I have the Snap On XHDRM zero degree offset, box end and ratcheting box end on same wrench. This is the set-up I recommend for the reason mentioned earlier. You need a fixed wrench to break the bolt free, then you flip it and ratchet it off. I sometimes wish I had flex heads. EZRed make these. But then, if you haven't got a flex head fixed box wrench, I wonder how helpful a fixed ratchet would be. That said, I think I'd like a set of flexhead ratchets. Bluepoint make a set. Could be the same as EZRed, dunno.

If you have a decent set of them, no, it won't...I've used a 4 lb hammer on my 10 mm bluepoint to break something loose tons of times

I haven't figured out who has them yet but if you want reversible AND flex(not that you mentioned that feature, just for discussion) I think the options get narrowed down a bit. I am wanting sets as well, metric and SAE. It is hard to sort through the features and brands to get something good as well as inexpensive.

Gearwrench makes the reversible flex head. I went ahead and picked up the SAE and Metric 7 pc sets of reversibles from Advance Auto Parts this morning. $30 per set is cheap enough.

For the price, you can't beat them. The 9/16 ratchet wrench from HF only broke when I used it as a slugging wrench in a fairly tight spot. Plus, I think HF has good warranty.

I have some from about 9 companies. Gearwrench are my favorites. IMO there doesn't really seem to be much difference between brands I have.

I like my Blackhawk reversible set and my Proto reversible spline set. Chinese GearWrench feels like junk to me compared to the Taiwan/USA offerings. Whatever you get, just make sure its reversing or flex head. Supposedly SK is coming out with a set, but it will probably be at a premium price.

I couldn't be happier with my Armstrong SAE reversible ratcheting wrenches and my Proto Metric reversible ratcheting wrenches...

I don't even touch my gearwrenchs anymore...I have no use for a non-reversible ratcheting wrench...I was removing the brake booster on my 74 Ramcharger once and got the ratcheting wrench stuck on the bolt stud because there was not enough clearance to remove the wrench and I couldn't put the bolt back on....not something I care to EVER repeat.

That's what I did; they're a great value, particularly when 50% off. I've been very satisfied w/ the wrenches.

That's what I got from Advance. Wish I had known Auto Zone carried them, I could have gotten points on my card.

I have the gear wrench sets. Just regular non flex head. Got both standard and metric on sale when sears had them for like 9 bucks a set. Although somehow my 10mm disappeared. I won't be buying a single anytime soon. Not for another 8 bucks. No thank you

GW doesn't have reversing flex. For the American market you're essentially limited to Blue-Point/Williams if you want reversible flex. Kabo makes them also but there aren't too many offering them and they're generally the long style.
