Hi..
I'm Myra..(a girl)
Just thought I'd let you know so no one thinks I'm crazy..
First off... I love tools. I always have. I remember back in the day , I was about 3. My favorite toy was my daddy's tool box.
I THOUGHT I knew a lot but I'm realizing I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to wrenches & ratchets & such. I love hammers & such..
An 86 yr old gentleman has asked me to sell what's left of his tools.
I'm listing on eBay..
My eBay ID is ruby6693..
I'd appreciate any help...
I'm fixing to list a S-K ratchet.. It's a 3/8.. I think.
The number on it is 45170 .. Pat.# is 2232477...
There's a lot to list so if anyone is interested in giving me some advice, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch.... Myra

if you click on the "Advanced Search" link on ebay and look down a little ways you'll see a box for searching only completed auctions. This will give you a very good indication of the going rate of something.

You also cant go too wrong with starting a 7 or 10 day auction at .01 and letting it go provided you titled it correctly and specifically.

Lastly we have a classified section here which is fee free, but you need prices, yet can always add in "Or Best Offer".

Unfortunetly dont expect to get tons of money for older SK tools, especially well used ones.

Myra Hi and welcome to the GJ.

like someone said you can do a search for tools that have sold to give you some basic idea of a price. Take a look at some of the asking prices on this forum for a better idea of prices also.

If you are not sure about the drive size of any ratchets maybe this idea might help you out:

If you have a handfull of sockets look on the bottom of each socket today they make them a very standard size. (although not to confuse you, they did make odd sizes a very long time ago), but don't worry about that. If you have some sockets on hand try this approach to see what drive size the ratchet is.

If the size of the socket is small but it looks like a pencil eraser tip would fit inside the very bottom of the square drive then you have a 3/8" size.

If the pencil will not fit then you have a 1/4" drive.

If two pencils will fit into the bottom of the socket the you will have a 1/2" drive.

Hope that helps you out.

Thank you!!
Great idea..

I thought or hoped the S-K tools would bring pretty good. I'm not expecting tons of money. :) However, they seem to be well made & in very good condition.
I'm just trying to help the old fella out (he's 86). He fell & broke a hip & while he was hospitalized, he was relieved of a lot of his tools by thieves.. Sad but true.. So he asked me to "get rid" of what was left...

I spent the evening sorting.. I've found a lot of old Craftsman & some Snap-On & some other USA made tools, that I can't think of the names now..

Since I only found this site tonight, I'm trying to figure out how to post pictures & hopefully I'll find the classified section.
Thanks again for your help..

If you're selling mechanics tools and want a bit more understanding, take a look at the link in my sig. Secondly, I may recommend posting items here instead of eBay for 2 reasons.
1) It's free to post and YOU name the price. Members haggle from there (just keep your initial prices reasonable)
2) It is highly likely the people here will appreciate the tools much better than your average eBay tool buyer. If I'm looking to sell items I don't really care about and aren't looking to make bank, I'll stick it on eBay but otherwise, it comes to the community.

You can really get burned listing on eBay. If only one person is interested in your tool (happens more than you would expect), it ends up selling at a point where you would be better off keeping it. I think we have ALL lost money selling on eBay but hopefully we can help you avoid too much damage.

Awesome!! Thank you.
I'd rather sell anywhere but ebay. Ebay is really the only online site, I've ever used.
I didn't know about this site until earlier tonight or last night. I'm really enjoying it.. Still learning, though...
Thanks for your advice & help. :)

WoW!!! Thank you! Your tip is great. It'll certainly help me a lot.
I had no idea.
I've been lost trying to list/sale these tools. I'm finding things that I've never seen.
I'm happy to have found this site & I really appreciate your help.
I think, I'll try selling some on here.
Ebay is the only place that I've ever sold, it's great to know there's other options.
Thanks Again!!!!!

Take good pictures, show all the numbers, all the marks, and as much as you can repeat all the numbers etc. in the listing so that searches will find it.

You may need to post 5 or 10 times before you can include an image.

Flat rate priority mail is great for combined tool purchases. When packing tools its essential to securely attach them to a piece or cardboard etc to give them enough size not to poke through a package and fall out.

Great advice!
As a matter of fact, I bought a tool recently & it ripped through the envelope..if you hadn't mentioned securing the tool.. I probably wouldn't have thought of it when I ship..

What do you mean by "You may need to post 5 or 10 times before you can include an image."...

Is there a reason? Is it the site or will I not be able to figure it out?

Thanks a ton for your help...

Its a common anti spam measure used by many forums.

For me, I type this stuff, then click the Go Advanced button below.

When the edit window opens back up I have a menu below it with Additional Options.

The second group of those includes Manage Attachments.

The rest is figurable outable.

Take the crapy stuff to Tri city or jonesboro flee market, put the better stuff on feebay, garage j., craigs.

Yeah... I hate doing flea mkts.. Like going, just hate selling at them.. I've not found much ****.. Most are USA forged...

The **** that I have found or will find, will be donated to a local charity.. Kinda like a good will but it benefits kids.. :) & the elderly...

IMHO, your ratchets prices are a little high. 41570 can be bought for 15 bucks total all day on ebay

Thank you....
I started the first bunch at .99... Then, I found this site & on one of the threads, the guys were raving about the SK ratchet, so I listed a couple pretty high.. I guess it was a mistake.. If they dont sell there.. I'm going to put them in classifieds here.. :) Thanks for your help....
