Hey guys,

I'm doing some small scale demolition on the lean to behind my shop. It previously had some random fencing and from what I'm told provided shelter for goats. The lumber used in the fencing is rough cut 2x10. I'm wondering what kind of wood it is and if anyone on here can make any use of it.

Rough End

It measures about 1-7/8" x 9-7/8" 6 to 10 foot length.

Any suggestions or takers? Outside of Athens, Ga

Craigslist for it if you don't want it. If it is good shape and not a lot of rot, warp, etc it can fetch more than new. I do woodworking and have used a lot. It is well seasoned and such, I have seen it go for 2 a BF or better. Some even 6 a BF here but I wouldn't pay that. I usually sweep it off good then run a metal detector over the stuff I use. I have a planer and plane it. It looks really good.Someone in your area would want it, you just have to find out who.

I was thinking craigslist too. I just wanted to try to nail down what it was before I subject myself to the unwashed masses.

Thanks guys.

i do not like craigslist. i do not want people anywhere near my home. i would put the word out to your friends, and see if they know any wood workers.

unrelated... my wife has been wanting to have a garage sale. i will get a divorce before people i do not know go into my garage.

related... wait... you make fences out of oak? that would never work in michigan. we use cedar.

It's Southern yellow pine, in good shape. I'm in SC and am familar with SYP. Don't need it though. Look up Woodcraft supply if there is one in Athens, call them and see if anyone might want it. If no joy there you might try Hotlanta.

It doesn't do much to show the end grain of lumber. It could be a lot of things, but I'll vote SYP as well. Old, dry SYP can be some good stuff for woodworking. If you have something you'd like for the house, like a table top, you might be able to trade all of it for some wood work.

Oh no. I didn't make the fence. PO made it, it was under shelter at least. Most of the leanto was built with this rough cut stuff, I'm just replacing or tearing it out as needed.

The roof was done with the same stuff, rotten and broken in the middle of the outer span.

Once the space is cleared out I can park my 74 Blazer under it.

I've used the Woodcraft in Roswell before. I may take a piece to Highland Hardware during my lunch hour one day.

Looks like salvaged common pine I wouldn't pay much for it but you might get luck.

After looking more carefully at your pic, I would say that is from an older tree, maybe 30 years old. Planed down it would make beautiful furniture grade lumber. It would( if there is enough of it) make a nice chest along the lines of the old tool boxes they use to have in textile mills.

Actually, the end grain is what is most important in identifying unknown wood. Nearly every species has a very distinct end grain pattern. Unfortunately, the end grain in these pictures is too rough to use.

Here's a link to a primer on the art and science of i.d.ing wood:

Also, based on the title, I first thought this thread was for women only!

Point taken. I should have said rough cut end grain.
