Rats burrowing under my pad/slab

By the looks of the picture, I was guessing that the OP had a metal garage which was probably detached. :dunno: I remember once when I was a kid, we had a dog house with a pen in the back yard for our dog. Rats built a nest underneath the dog house. My dad got the garden house and ran water down the holes and it didn't take long for them to start coming out. Rats don't burrow down that deep. As they came out we chased them down- my dad with a shovel and me with a baseball bat. We got rid of them. If they are getting under the house and you run water down their holes, like I said, they won't be that far deep down in the ground. So, I doubt the exhaust fumes, smoke bombs or water would do any damage. I'd start with the easy way first. I'd be a lot more concerned with the rat problem than the other minor stuff to get rid of them.

Rats cannot burp.

If rats eat the peanut butter/baking soda mix their stomach acid reacts with the soda to expand their stomach to the point their lungs are collapsed they cannot breath.

Try it!

Propane ,its heavier than air , feed some into the holes , stand well back and throw a burning rag at the opening ,
yes the ground will lift like a earth tremor , a loud whump will scare the neighbours
there might be some damage to the foundations of the property

But the rats will be toast

Concrete slurry thru a large hose. Fill the holes right up. But yes to the heavy wiremesh about 2 feet down and angled out all around.

I do like the Rodenator idea though. Anything that blows up I just got to play with at least once.

I don't recommend this approach, but it worked for a friend who had chipmunks under his slab. He disconnected the regulator and hose from his grill. He then proceeded to fill the space with propane and lit a match. :eyecrazy:

It worked.

Don't know if I would recommend it under a slab, but for ground hogs we always used about a half cup of gasoline tossed down the hole, waited a few minutes to let the fumes travel through the burrow, then tossed a match, The 'explosion' supposedly knocked out the varmints and used up all the oxygen so they would asphyxiate before they woke up. Always worked too.

"They avoid things that make them burp"
That is is why you mix it 50/50 with peanut butter.
They love the peanut butter.

http://ratbehavior.org/vomit.htm

Yea we all know rats cant burp or vomit but Baking soda is not going to kill rats even if you mix it with peanut butter. Baking soda is non toxic, rats will drink carbonated soda pop just enough to make them sick and they will stop drinking it. any gas in there stomachs will be passed out the backside. So many stupid internet hoaxes for rats I just don't understand why people don't use traditional snap traps or rodenticides that will actually kill them.

It would be a pretty cheap thing to try before blowing up the garage.

I just want them gone. I'm going to install hardware cloth tomorrow rigged so they can squeeze out but not easily get back in and then I'll wait a few weeks to see how things are going. I will see if I can figure out how far the burrows go, but I may need to call someone to find the extent of the burrows. Effing ******* rats, not what I wanted to spend $500+ on this spring.

something like this, is what I have. Make sure it is hardware cloth. Bend the cloth into an L before fastening it.

I've used this with good results.

That will work for keeping skunks out but dont think it will work for rats as they can smell that they have been in there before and think its there place. They are territorial.

If you choose this route, please have cameras rolling from multiple angles. :rocker:

As far as I know I still have rats. I need to check my bait stations to see if they are eating any, but I saw one run across the yard to the garage the other day. Damn mother f**kers.
