i used a 20 yr old can of paint to paint a welding table and the paint came out in splatters, which i liked. my question is short of waiting another 20 years is there another way of getting the paint in a new can to come out like that? here is a pic to show you what i mean, it is the blue paint that came out in splotches. any tricks from the rattle can crowd?

the nozzle might have some buildup causing that. you might be able to pull it out of that can and use it with others. i have done the opposite when i have a nozzle throwing drops.

I agree. It does look cool. Are you planning to clear it to preserve the missed splotch areas?

the paint underneath the blue is a hammered grey and underneath that is grey primer. i think those three coats should hold up well. i have an identical table i painted in red to match my HF box but now what to splotch it with ivory ( my favorite Harley colors were red and ivory back in the day)

Oh, that all worked out perfectly, with the hammered coat. Hope someone has a way to recreate the splatter.
I have no idea; drill nozzle, cut edges of nozzle with knife, partially block it?

as soon as you paint it take a rag and blot it all over. will give a similar effect. if that doesnt work good enough, take a rag and soak it with carb cleaner, then blot it around while wet. should do something. :)

I THINK what happened is a lot of the propellant bled out over the years. You might be able to duplicate that by inverting a new rattle can and letting a lot of propellant out then put it back upright and see if it works.

What might NOT work is that the paint itself looks like it started to congeal. I have no idea if there's a way to duplicate that. When you bleed the propellant down, bleed a LOT of it out to make it sputter. This may make it come out similar to this. A few wasted cans (and dollars) are in your future though.

This.

You also might try only partially depressing the nozzle, letting your index finger (with a nitrile glove on it) hang over and interfere with the spray pattern or putting the can in the fridge for a bit before you paint.

Or just use rustoleum professional spray cans. About every other can spits and shits out paint. Basic problem with the new(couple years now) high flow nozzle!

Im impressed you were able to use a can of paint that old! mine seem to go bad after about 2 weeks. Rust oleum has quite a few colours with the hammered effect and maybe some spatter paints. Eastwood sells splatter paint for car trunks that is pretty neat looking too.

Don't know about now but a couple of years ago there was available spray cans of splatter, hammer tone and other special finishes available. You may wish to research it on the Net and see what turns up.

i soak the nozzles in paint thinner. I tend to keep nozzles once the can is done. So when a nozzle is clogged, I just change out the nozzle
