Can this cause a fire? If they melt, I will just use some wire next time. But, can I leave them on for now? Or, maybe I should drill out the rivet thing, and put a bolt, the right way. Next time.

worm clamp. Not a long last solution in the rust belt but it will stop the rattle for a year or two.

Alternately just remove it all together.

Wouldn't even bother with plastic or rope and yes it will burn.

they do have those stainless zips.... but dependents on the material... if it is aluminum... probably the vibration will cause the stainless zip to cut through it in no time.

Safety wire seems to hold them pretty well. Its all that has been holding my cat together for about two years.

Use stainless banding, the same stuff they sell for securing rubber boots on cv joints and tie rods on steering racks.

Bailing wire . . . . . . you know the stuff that holds bales of HAY !! :D

Seriously, everyone should have a few pieces of bailing wire for emergencies.

If you must use zip ties Hilti makes red fire proof ties. Still not the best solution but much better than a standard zip tie.

For your safety and the safety of others I suggest you find a mentor/teacher for mechanical 101. Or go back to playing with *** toys.

How will you drill out the rivet? With the drill you have yet to purchase?

How about a nut and bolt once the rivet is gone?

I just put a large hose clamp on the heat shield of my 1995 GMC 1500 about 2 weeks ago. If you don't have one large one, use 2, 3, 10, whatever it takes.

Chances are good, that if it is rattling, it is at the end of the line and there will be little left to hook on to.

When mine get that way, a bit of bent up 18Ga. a couple of "Z" brakets and some bolts will fix it forever. In this case the original is in good shape, but more protection above was needed.

Bailing wire is the most price effective, but you will have to distribute the load.
I would use stainless strapping. Great stuff to have around. Telcoms used to use it, it lasted forever. Get the kit with the stainless buckles.
Use gloves.

Mechanics wire or SS safety wire (thicker variety) are likely the best alternatives... I've tried tack welding it before, but had to redo it every few thousand miles.

"bailing wire" or soft iron wire (mechanics wire) will rust away in fairly short order, even here where they do not salt the roads.
mine's been secured with a couple gigantic worm-type hose clamps for three or four years now. had to buy four of them and double them up. works dandy.

+1 on the worm style hose clamp. You can take a few and put them together if you can't find one large enough. When I was a broke college student I used this technique to keep my heat shields together. The "repair" held for 4+ years until I got rid of it.

I went to the nearest Tractor Supply to get bailing wire and they didn't have any. I asked and they said they did not stock it anymore, only stock bailing twine.

Ended up getting it at the local feed store.

As to the heat shield, if you run out of zip ties, just use a ratchet strap. Preferably one of those ones from HF that feel like plastic.

so it can melt and smells like fresh paint everytime you get out of the car? i wouldnt run a ratchet ******** heat. never have, so i dont know what it will do, but common sense tells me it might join itself to the heat shield.

we just need a picture of what you are working on or forget the picture. you should have it fixed by now lol
