At least for the 4L80e there is a rebuild manual that takes you through the process step by step.

I've never done one, I have a friend that's done a few, he always buys the manual , says there a walk in the park once you have that. Snap ring pliers are the only thing I can think of

If by specialty tools you mean specific to the trans, then I am pretty sure the answer is yes. It's been years since I had to deal with rebuilding trans but if memory serves me it needs more than a set of snap ring pliers.

You'll need a clutch spring compressor and an SBC cam bearing install tool. You might want to verify if that will be the right size for the output bushing at the back of the case. That works for the th350 but I can't remember if the OD cases are different. Shouldn't be, because they are both 27 spline outputs. You can make the clutch spring compressor from a lock plate compressor or a caliper spreader. You'll also need a bushing driver set, like the one at HF. The pilot bushing in the output shaft can be cut out carefully with a dremel, otherwise I think the tool is like $30 on Amazon.

Can't think of anything else specifically other than a couple good pairs of snap ring pliers and some feeler gauges. I take the bare case to my friends at the axle/****** shop and they spray it in their wash cabinet. That is worth every penny of a case of the ****** beer they drink Lol.

There is a th350 book by Ron Sessions that summit carries for $20. Don't know if there is something similar for the 700r4 / 4l60 / xl6xe trannies, but a lot of it would carry over since it is the predecessor to those. Either way, that book is worth $200, and I would want to have it if you are in to doing Turbo Hydromatics or any auto really. If nothing else, it goes over how to either make or work around most of the special tools any auto mech. will need such as using feeler gauges or piano wire to install orings and stuff.

Oh, you'll need a dial indicator to measure end play, and a caliper to measure shim thickness. Most of this stuff is stuff that any mechanic this stubborn is going to need for other stuff like engine overhauls, ring and pinions, etc. The only tool I specifically need for TH trannies is the clutch spring compressor, which I made from a caliper spreader in like 45 seconds (I posted a picture of it on this forum somewhere a few weeks ago).

Ya. You'll be fine then lol.

Oh, you can get drop cloth that is plastic on one side, and a white, absorbent, foam-ish stuff on the other. I use that on my workbench and replace it frequently. Works awesome for absorbing ATF and allowing you to see contaminants and check balls and stuff.

Egg cartons are handy for organizing the pieces in the valve body, and don't forget to soak your frictions in ATF (I saved a shortbread cookie tin for this lol).

I rebuilt a TH400 last year. Fairly involved but got a video that took me through the process. If you have questions, best forum I found to ask them is www.yellowbullet.com - lots of good trans builders hang out there.

I rebuilt the 700R4 (4L60) in my 90 Camaro. Was my first time working on a transmission. The overhaul manual is recommended. I can't recall what tools I used, but nothing too specialized. Sounds like you got it covered anyways. Have lots of rags, white preferablely, to place parts on. And lots of flat space (counters, tables, etc. or floor if you must). A pair of tough "Mechanics" gloves should help too. I remeber lots of ATF and nick and cuts on my hands. Good Luck.

First of all, what kind of vehicle are we talking about? Year, make, model & engine size. That way I can ID the Trans. Second, what's it doing? That's an electronic trans and sometimes a simple solenoid issue can make you think the worst. Lets start there.

i'm a GM tech, i overhaul these tran's all the time,..(ten 4l60's to one 4l80 tho) keep in mind, they are totally 2 different trannys.. but the most important tools you will need that is probabably not in your toolbox, is the correct 'sizers" for the teflon sealing rings and seal protectors for installing clutch piston seals, just slappin friction and or steel plates in is the easy part.. re-sealing the unit (im talking internal seals)weather it be teflon or lip seals is where its going to matter, that you do the job right.

it is in a 94 2500 2wd silverado...it is not my truck, a friend of the family. He said it was puking trans fluid out the breather & shifting sluggish...read the puking fluid could be a blocked trans cooler, but he already has it out so...And from what I have read it could be either trans depending on the RPO code...MT1=4l80e, , m30 =4l60e. they put both in2500's...Thanks Shawn

Do yourself a favor and get this DVD, its awesome and shows pretty much everything you need to know.

http://www.technicalvideos.com/

I did a 4l60E using this video and the transmission shop I use sometimes put the seals on for me, since the sizing tools are not cheap. The trans shop also supplied the kit and there was also some kind of "shift improver" kit they recommended. It had some parts for the valve body and pump. Sorry I forgot the name.. So far I have about 35,000 miles on the rebuild so I would say it was a success.
