Re-doing Epoxy Floor

Hi guys, new to the forum. I did my brand new garage floor about 7 years ago with the DIY Behr 2-part epoxy kit. I used 2 kits to cover ~550 square feet. A couple small spots are now peeling, but mainly where the car tires ride, the epoxy has worn through. It isn't peeling, it just appears to be worn. So I want to do it with something more durable this time around, and make sure I prep it right. Sherwin Williams recommended the H&C kits, with the color and then to follow with the clear glaze to add durability. However, that stuff seems to be the same cheaper type product like the Behr I used before. I can buy the 1000HS epoxy for a pretty reasonable price ($165 for 1 gallon of Part A and 1 gallon of Part B). For prep, I was told to rent a floor buffer with the Diamabrush prep tool to grind the floor. It will remove the loose epoxy and rough the rest up. I will then powerwash it and degrease it before coating. I have 3 questions:

1. Is the prep the right thing to do?
2. Is the 1000HS the right product for better durability and will it stick to the Behr stuff?
3. How far will the 1000HS go? If I mix 1 gallon of Part A and 1 gallon of Part B for 2 total gallons, the coverage area advertised (206-350 sq. ft) should double and give me 412-700. If I do just one coat, will 2 gallons be enough?

I'd appreciate any advice!

Diamabrush has two tools: Concrete Prep Tool and Coatings / Mastic removal tool. I would suggest the latter for your application.

Once that is done, you will want to apply a primer, followed by either a high solids (93-100%) epoxy and a quality top coat which will vary based on your location and VOC requirements.

A lot of your questions need to be answered by the people who make the product. I found this data sheet to be helpful http://www.paintdocs.com/docs/webPDF.jsp?SITEID=STORECAT&doctype=PDS&lang=E&prodno=B67C2000

I would have a look at the percentage of solids. Ultimately it means you are going to have a 3-5 Mil dry film thickness. To put that in perspective, a sheet of copy paper is 4 Mils thick.

Tony,

You're going to want to put down at least 2 coats. You're not going to get proper coverage with just one, a lot of your first coat is going to absorb into the concrete and it will look very uneven. Take a look at other posts when people lay down their primer.

To make this easy let's just figure 1100 sq ft. (550 x2) Since you're getting about 200 sq. ft./gallon @ 5.0 mils DFT (8 mils wet film thickness), you're going to want to purchase 6 gallons. Should take just about 3 gallons per coat.

Do you plan on finishing with a polyurethane? I'd suggest it since you're doing all the hard work, might as well do it right!

We have thousands of superb results recoating home center garage epoxy with our Armorclad a Epoxy systems. Suggest use of the Primer on a previously coated floor.

Yes use of a grinder or Diamabrush is a good idea.

I re-did my floor which I epoxied 20 yrs ago. Used a diamond grinder with an attached vacuum. Did a great job and also prep'd the floor at the same time. I used a PPG product, Amercoat 400 with a 700 Top coating, Not cheap stuff but worked really well. Here are some pics
