Great rehab of some neat cabinets.

Really like that one with the glass doors for books/manuals.

Keep us posted.

I think it was this thread that gave me the idea to repurpose some cubicle overhead cabinets. We're replacing many Steelcase cubicles and they have the same cabinets as your black ones, I'm slowly convincing the Facilities guy to let me take some home for my garage. I've gotten 2 so far (4' and 5½' ones), hopefully I'll have 4-6 more for my garage soon.

Customcab, is the single door white cabinet that you are going to make look like a Coke Machine...a Block & Sons Blok Bilt steel cabinet?

It looks alot like the one that I have had for years. It fits nicely between the Garage door tracks at my place and I was thinking of painting it to look like an old Sinclair Gas Pump and install a Globe on top, but your idea has me rethinking what I was going to do.

I recently "Stumbled" across a guy selling a 2 door Blok Bilt steel cabinet that is the bigger brother of my single door...picked it up for $10 off Craigslist.

I love the old "Retro" Steel rounded corner Cabinets, there is so much you can do with them...Keep up the great work. I can wait to see more of what you've done.

Looks Great!

Thanx!! I just now saw your reponse. I've been off a few days.
A friend gave me that cabinet when she moved to a smaller house upon retirement. I know that cabinet is pretty old, but I don't know the vintage or the brand. Her folks bought it and she's 70. Funny thing is, I too thought of making a "fake" gas pump out of it, then I remembered that I had some Jacobs Coke machine parts laying around. I'll get some more pics up soon. I've been working on other stuff and haven't made much progress on it.

Did it have a "Football" shaped chrome handle on it and 4-5 shelves that are spot welding in place?
Its most likely the same one. I love the look of it.

My first one came out of a friends Basement, he had just bought the house from some old retired couple, and he didnt want it...Go Figure!

I have a powerstrip mounted inside the smaller one with all 4 of my chargering stations...all the batteries and cordless tools.

The bigger one has drill bits, sandpaper supplies for bodywork ect.,

Can't wait to see your's all done.

.

Ya know, I think it did. The latch didn't work so I took it off. There wasn't a logo on it anywhere. It must have had a sticker on it originally. When I got it, I wondered who made them. There used to be a couple of metal cabinet manufacturers here in Indiana. I just figured it was from one of them. It's got 4 or 5 welded in shelves inside, and it's pretty thin gauge sheetmetal.

It is pretty thin sheetmetal, your right. I LiquidNailed 1/2" plywood that I cut and clamped under each shelf to stiffen them up alittle more...cant even see the plywood because the lip on each shelf.
I will take a photo of the sticker...it would have been on the inside, top right door.
It was only 1"x1 1/4" in size and very thin.

Thanx, my sticker must have been lost long ago. Here's a few more pix that were in the camera. I'll take some more after I make some progress.

Jacobs vend door painted-The bottom of this piece was completely rusted out and the whole bottom half of the cap catcher was gone. This machine had set outside in the woods at least 40 years.

Thought I'd post a couple more pix. Got the last of my old cabinets done. Probably should get some of my cars and trucks done now. These were a couple I've wanted to do something with for a long time. The small one is an old Foxboro recorder chart cabinet. It's cast aluminum. Demo'd out years ago where I work. Sure don't see stuff like that anymore. The other is an old base cabinet that had seen better days. It'll be a little more pampered now.

Wow! Neat job on the Foxboro cabinet... No clue what that was until I Googled it. I would have looked at that at a sale and said who needs that junk? Where did you come up with all the ideas??

Did you just make it into a light or is there something else inside ... kinda looks like it might be a radio ???

Found a couple more pix. The key holder is a 55 T-bird horn button that's a cast off from a project I'm working on now. I hated to throw it away, so I put hooks on it and reused it.

I think you mean you "re-purposed" the t-bird horn button... :bounce: You may have to rename this thread the "re-purposed" garage. lol

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanx, I had been walking past those things forever and one day got the idea that I could gut one and make a small cabinet or clock out of it. That was my original intent, but I have too many clocks now.
That glass front is 10" though, so it would be easy to make one out of it. I used a 9" gas station decal from a place that sells vintage oil company logo's. They have every brand you've ever heard of and some you haven't.
I put a small flourescent "puck" light inside to backlite the logo simular to a gas pump globe.I tried an LED lite but it wasn't bright enough. I didn't want a regular bulb because of the heat. This little lite doesn't get too hot at all. I put that SS mesh in the hole to let heat escape, but it's been fine. There's also one shelf inside.
The old T-bird horn button was just too cool to toss, so I HAD to figure out a way to use it. A cabinet handle or drawer pull would have been my next option.....:thumbup: I restored the 55 Bird steering wheel for a buddy, so I kept the old button. The "new" one was $350!
(from a few posts back)
I also got my fake coke machine the "Cokeclone" done and in use. here's a couple of pix of that too. It's just got shelves inside. Doesn't vend and lever doesn't move. It just sits there and looks sort of like an old vintage Coke machine, without the skyhigh cost. I still need to get a couple of small decals for it.
All look great...I have a similar cabinet to your "Cokeclone", never thought of doing that to it...:bowdown:
Well if I hadn't already had a VERY rusty Jacobs 26 machine, I would have never thought of it either. I would have done it up as a Vintage gas pump clone. The shape of it would have lended itself real well to that too.
Thanx! :beer:
Some people can turn everything they touch into art. Me, I'm lucky not to break stuff that I try to refinish.
I love your work!
Customcab,
Love what you have done... I just need to see a whole shot of the garage.
And where did you get the coke decals?
I found a vendor on ePay that had them pretty reasonable (Oldgaspump.com). There's a whole aftermarket out there for people restoring old pop vending machines and gas pumps. They're about as crazy as us car guys! You name the machine...and somebody makes decals, labels, manuals, and some parts for it. :beer:
