Re-purposing an old coffee grinder

I've had this old coffee grinder gathering dust for years. I dug it out the other day thinking I could do some repurposing. I'm thinking a lamp will look nice. After I got it cleaned up I took some pics.
MVC012S-vi.jpg

I will degrease this, as is, and spray it with clear satin to seal it up and hopefully preserve the patina.
MVC011S-vi.jpg

I just hit this with a brass wire brush to clean it up. A little Tuff Stuff spray cleaner got all of the dust and brushing residue off. I took it all apart and removed the "grinding guts". These were pretty nasty...
MVC009S-vi.jpg

The plan is to make a plate that will screw into the top and run the cord up thru the middle of the grinder.
MVC002S-vi.jpg

After removing the grinding cones I had to put a stop collar on the shaft to hold it in. You can see a pin in the "guts" pic above that held everything together in the body.
MVC007S-vi.jpg

I have a big piece of 1/4" thick copper plate, 6" wide x 5' long. I cut a chunk off that and laid out a circle to use as a plug for the top.
MVC001S-vi.jpg

I cut it out on the bandsaw and knocked off the corners.
MVC006S-vi.jpg

and ground it to a circle on the 6" belt sander.
MVC008S-vi.jpg

To mount the plate I drilled three holes in the lip of the grinder and tapped them for 1/4-20 set screws.
MVC010S-vi.jpg

MVC011S-vi.jpg

I center drilled the edge of the plate so the screws seat very well and hold it tightly.
I was thinking of building the upper lamp portion with black pipe but then I had another thought...
MVC012S-vi.jpg

The plate is COPPER.... Why not flaunt that... :) Setting the plate up in the mill for some embellishment. That is a grinding stone for a Dremel tool chucked into the mill....
MVC014S-vi.jpg

After doing a bit of math I settled on a pattern and, using the Tpac Tools DRO, I got busy.
MVC015S-vi.jpg

It doesn't look that good initially but, the more I did, the better it got.
MVC017S-vi.jpg

It's far from perfect but it does add a bit of character.
MVC019S-vi.jpg

The plan now is to build the lamp portion out of copper tube and fittings.
MVC025S-vi.jpg

The important part is, the BOSS liked it. So I am happy. That's where I'm at right now. I have ordered some "antiqued" bronze hardware, harp and light socket, and a cloth cord with an antique plug so I am waiting on those to come in to get this wrapped up.
Thanks for looking!

wow, that is a nice project!
I have got some brass screws that would really complete the look as setscrews to hold your copper plate in. 1/4-20 x 3/8 through 3". Let me know if you want a couple and I'd be glad to put a couple in the mail for you.

My dad made a lamp out of a similar old coffee grinder, way back in the 1940s. My sister still has it in her living room.

That will be a cool lamp. One tip for engine turning, you want to use something soft be it wood, felt, rubber and an abrasive paste, it will give a much more even swirl. Using hard stones, especially on softer material will cause the erratic scratches that you have there.

Look at Cratex abrasive rods. Should work very nicely for what you are doing.

Thank You Dan! I hadn't thought of using brass set screws. Good idea! Thanks for the offer but I need to do a parts run to the hardware for this dude anyway so I'll just pick up a few. :)

Thanks guys on the engine turning suggestion. I have done it on aluminum a few times and I have the Cratex rubber "stones". I wanted this to look kind of rough though and I will probably blacken the copper a bit so I want this to show though.

The trick with any repurposed lamp project is to have the right lamp shade. Might I suggest an old shade frame covered with old coffee sacks? I have seen this done and it really looks great.

Man, you ever grind coffee with that thing? I have a really old burr grinder (electric) that I grind my beans with. Makes the best coffee in a french press. But I'm kind of a coffee snob...so...

Ya know... You must be living in my head...
The last time my wife and I went to Hawaii we visited one of the coffee plantations. I picked up a bunch of used, very cool, burlap coffee sacks. I was going to use them to upholster the seat in an F1 Ford truck I was building. The truck got sold and I still have the sacks... You see where this going, right?

No, never did. I seriously thought about it and I still could if I wanted to clean up the cones but I don't think that is going to happen. As you can see in the pics it was pretty grundgy on the inside. I also have a nice electric grinder that does a good job without putting metal filings into the coffee...

Other then finding a shade this project is done.!
MVC033S-vi.jpg

I used some 3/4" copper cutoffs I had in storage to make the riser. The harp, antiquey cloth covered cord and bulb socket came from Antique Lamp Supply and a couple of fittings from the hardware store got it all bolted together.

Now to find the right shade...

The Edison bulb is an idea. We were looking at them at our Local Ace Hardware yesterday. They have quite a selection. I just mentioned it to the better half and she said that might work. The only thing I see with that is it looks awefully bottom heavy with no shade. We'll see. We haven't done any shade searches yet. My wife hits all of the resale shops, Goodwill and Salvation Army stores so I'm sure she'll find a shape she likes. Time will tell.
Thanks for the kudo's and ideas guys! This is a great site!

Reading this thread, an Idea was brought up....
Whatever shape-size shade that you go with...wrap it with Burlap material and lightly Stencil paint the word Coffee and Beans on it.

I have 2 Old (60's or 70's) coffee grinder lamps in my Basement (TV Viewing area) and I think that I may do that to those Lamps.
