re-roofing the garage.

Hello I am in the process of redoing the roof on my parents garage and wanted to get some idea and advice on which route to take. The garage has been my learning space for about 3 years and the roof was leaking before i started using it, but it was not a problem until now. I am deploying in about 4 month and plan on using this area to store my furniture. A part of me wants to try and build this myself using the internet as my guide and i honestly believe i can, but I have no construction experience which worries me. If i do decide on a contractor i would like to help with the build since i have nothing going on at the moment, do think this would be a problem?

Right now the garage leaks pretty bad for the center to the right side. So I plan to gut every thing and start fresh with new wood and install a metal roof, but my funds may stall these plans. so my questions are.

1= If i do not have the money for the metal can i just do the wood frame and plywood covered by tar paper until I get back. this will be about 8month to a year?

2= right now horizontal runs of the roof frame are too low to work on anything other than a car, i want to know which option would be cost effective: adding more block to get more height around 2.5ft-3ft higher , or a vaulted ceiling which would be great but worried about cost?

today i did not do much (pretty cold) but i manage to clean and pack some things and look closer at the carport side of the garage. this side has metal roofing already, so i do not plan on doing any work to it to keep the budget down. Right now it is nailed into the existing roof of the garage,but i was thinking of running 4x4s the length about 29ft. of the carport to support that side. will 4x4 be fine or should i go 4x6? also with the vaulted ceiling idea what size wood should i use for the spine. this will be 29ft also? thanks

Where are you located?....how much snow load?
if not too heavy 4x4 for uprights would be fine,double up a 2x6 or 2x8 for a beam on top(horizontal red line in photo)

metal roofing should only run about .60-.75 cents per sq ft ,maybe less for galvalum

first challenge

ok i have a metal walkway door for my garage. It is perfect height but too wide. cutting the concrete block for the door seems like the extreme way to fix this, plus the doorway has concrete steps leading into the carport matching the width of the door way. i was wanting to see if anyone has welded on a metal door and thoughts. i have heard these door a insulated and that may melt but i can just drill and spray foam if needed. i want to cut out a section and tack weld the side back on like you would sheet metal. look for idea or advice thanks

I would get the correct size door. Much easier.
