Just "for fun", I switched out the PAR20 cans in my office with 6.5W LEDs. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the amount of light produced, though I think their color specs of 4100k is off.

Anyhow, I have noticed several gas stations have installed blinding LED lighting. Appears to be just a big matrix of cheap-o bulbs. I haven't been able to find any suppliers though. They are FAR brighter than the typical gas station canopy lighting.

Anyone using LED for shop lighting? Or know a source? The gas station in particular which has switched to these around here is Kwik Trip.

As an Electrical Contractor, I've installed alot of LED lighting. Mostly outside parking lot, security wall mount and retrofitting gas station canopy lighting. Used Beta, Rab & a couple other brands, but as yet haven't seen any practical shop lighting except possibly the fluorescent retrofit configuration or recessed style w/ LED bulbs. Again, I don't personally like either of these options for true shop lighting. The LED technology is constantly being updated, hopefully something soon will fill this particular need. The biggest draw back to current LED technology is the cost and the fact that the individual bulbs may last quite a while but the actual "Drivers" that power the bulbs don't have the same long life and are seldom replaceable.

If you want to spend some money and get some awesome LED lighting use a Cree LR6 or a LR6-DR1000. The DR1000 puts out 1000 lumens and uses 12 watts of power.

I have several Cree Led lights in the house and I am trying to figure out the cost comparison of installing LED v/s T-8 or T-5 Tubes in the garage. They come in 2700K and 3500 K models.

The problem is that you will possibly need a lot of them.
