Realistic Price Expectation for Mac / Snap On / Equivalent Roll Cabs?

I am looking into getting my dad a single bay roll cab to replace the one he has. His has cabinets on the bottom and he has mentioned he would like one that has all drawers so he can get more functionality out of it. This is going to be a gift from my siblings and me, so price range is limited. He is a lifelong mechanic/truck driver so he knows and appreciates quality, which is why it needs to be a Mac, Snap On, or equivalent. He has never been able to get a really nice box so he will love this.

Anyway, the last few weeks I have been looking into used prices (craigslist, ebay, etc...) and am having trouble finding a used cabinet somewhat locally in the $500 range. I know that this is not much money but that is what we have to work with. Since I am not familiar with these boxes, is it reasonable to expect to be able to find a single bay, used (but in reasonably good shape) roll cab in this price range?

I am looking for a bigger tool box too. Locally, most are for sale in the $2000 and up range, with the median in the $4000 range. I know they are expensive when new, but used tool boxes sold for thousands mean cash only. I can't imagine that many people have $4k in cash to drop on a tool box (generally they are financed). I have upped my benchmark to $1000 but still aren't finding anything, and I just can't EVER see spending more than that on a box to hold tools...I mean that is a huge chunk of change.

Also a lot probably depends on the economy in your local area, for example the upper Midwest ie Detroit being a great place to buy.

But you are talking new price, right? I know these will hold value pretty well, but I expected (hoped) to find one that had depreciated a little bit.

finding a used roll cab that sized for $500 would not be a problem around here. Don't know about your area, since your location isn't listed.

The newer style used SnapOn boxes like that one typically sell for 1/4 to 1/3 the new price to a user, but can be significantly more to the uneducated. I too regularly see those boxes advertised ~$500. If you look around you can likely find that size of box in the older classic 60's SnapOn style with the matching top box for $100-200, but dont expect them to be in a smilar condition as the new ones.

I live in MN, and don't care too much about paint condition, just that the drawers operate nicely and there aren't large dents, etc...

i dont think you're far off in your expectations on price.

CL and sellers in general have wide ranging prices, aroud this area, i'm pretty sure everything is gold plated with diamond studded trim
