Hi, Folks,

I have an opportunity to acquire 3 new/surplus 9-drawer Vidmar tool cabinets. The owner's not interested in giving them away, but there's room for negotiation. If you needed such things, what would all of you consider a "fair" offer for them. In my region, these things rarely appear and never in this condition, so this is a pretty unusual offering.

I know already that some of you have picked stuff like this off the curb, or purchased them for $50 a pop. To this a say "congrats," and I'm envious; but that ain't going to happen around here.

As an aside, this site is great! I have completely rethought my shop layout after reading hundreds, if not thousands, of postings here. My first visit over morning coffee is to CL, then OWWM, now GJ, and then on to the news, which invariably shaves the buzz from the previous sites.

I'm prepping for painting it right now, so I'll delay posting photos until everything is back in place.

MAny thanks in advance!

You're not going to pick those up off of a curb or get them for $50 each.

Ther person selling them has a number in mind. You might want to lowball him, but don't be surprised if he's a little offended. I've seen them anywhere from $200 to $500 each around my area. So a lot of it depends on the condition. If they are in good shape, I'd go for $200 each. You can start out lower but even at $200 that's pretty much giving them away.

If you can get them at around $50 per drawer that's pretty good IMHO. I see them going used for up to around ~ $100.00 per drawer but that's too steep for me. Search completed Ebay ad's for pricing. I have never seen too many deals on cabinets used from local auction houses or ebay. I would guess brand new these types of cabinets are $175 - $230 per drawer.

Ohio is a pretty good place for these, but even then you have to be pretty lucky to get them in good condition for anywhere near $200. $350 is a bit more likely.

I got two recently in a gov auction. Long drive to pick them up but worth it.

Even after years sitting outside, all they needed to function well was a quick wire wheel of the surfaces the bearing wheels ride on. I'll save the paint restoration for another time.

I paid well under $50 a drawer, even including gas and a reasonable estimate of my time's value.

Good luck!

I bought an 11 drawer Lista for $250 and that was a steal, although it is a bit rough on the finish. Functionally it is fine.

I also bought a 9 drawer Vidmar for $75... But it was cut in half!

Truth is for $75 a drawer or less in like me condition is fair. $50 a drawer is a very good deal.

Got this Lyon cab for $50, (came w/the lock but I removed it so I can clean it up some) it has the one drawer at a time interlock system also. It's the common 60"H version. The deals ARE out there, this one sat on CL for 2 weeks listed for $50!
