First post. My son has a mansion in Boonville MO that was built by a riverboat captan. It was started in 1863 the construction was stopped during the Civil War, and the house was finished in 1870. No slaves were used to build the house. I have spent hours looking at the fit and craftsmanship. The house is beautiful walnut, syprus, mahagony woods where used. The mill work was done in St Louis and brought to the house site. Here is my question; what kind of tools did the carpenters use in that time period. Were steam engines used for power? I enjoy the forum and look forward to any answers. Thanks Edd

I would say all the on site work and fitting would have been done with hand tools only. The mill would have had a powered saw of some sort, possibly steam, more likely water.
