I had a hard time choosing between recessed and the typical fluorescent lights normally used in garages.

Well I must say Im very happy with how the recessed lights look. I used a total of 8 5" halos in my 24x25. Right now the bulbs are just hanging there since I dont have the trim covers on yet . I'll also be adding a light in the center of each bay from my liftmaster 3800.

haven't got to the lighting part of my new garage, but did you go this route because of the recessed lighting?

Is this route cost more?

.....just looking at my options???

I would not count on the long life claimed for LED's quite yet.

I installed some inside my home this past spring, I was really pleased with the light output, the look, and the cost wasnt to bad. So when it came time to pick out lights for the garage I just went with them.

I didnt use LEDS but I did purchase some high effiency bulbs.

If you look at the responses you have so far from actual users of recessed can lights, you will see that you DO NOT have near enough lighting.

Adam used 24 each fixtures in his 22x24

ddwag16 used 16 each in his 20x27

With only 8 fixtures, you will have lots of hot spots and dark areas. The light will not spread enough to prevent the dark areas.

It may look good now without the housings on the fixtures, but when the ceiling is in and the housings installed, it will be very different. Can lights are not broad area lighting fixtures, they are spot fixtures. Useful when you have low ceilings and don't want to sacrifice the 4 inches or so that fluorescent strips would take up.

That's your opinion , its plenty bright to me . And I didn't even install the 3800 lights yet in the center . Others could use 50 lights for all I care , I'm just showing my setup.

There's no dark spots , a lot of guys buy the 6" lights thinking bigger is better , but that's not the case with recessed lights . 5" and 6" both use the same bulbs , but 6" bulbs sit deeper in the housing so your light output isn't as wide .
These give a pretty nice wide light pattern .

I'd like to add that I am a transmission guy; I am usually trying to inspect something like a planet or a valve body and strong, clear, bright lighting is your best friend. I have two cans above each work bench specifically for that reason, as well as a 6' x 4' window facing to the south at each station as well.

There can NEVER be enough light for detail oriented work.
