Hopefully somebody can help me, because I have no idea!

I need to take the drum brakes off an 86 isuzu pickup truck. It was donated to the autoshop, and it doesnt run, so were scraping it, but the teacher asked If I would get the drums off so he can have more demos for the autos1 kids(drum brakes are one of the things covered in autos 1). So I get it up on the lift only to be dispointed that there is no cover plate... removing the axle c clips just turned into pulling the rearend and taking it apart :tantrum2:

So i got 2 other guys to help me pull it out, and I get the whole rearend up onto a workbench... It looks like i need to take the pinion housing off to get inside it, so I take off the nuts surrounding it, and give it a few taps with a hammer too loosen the rusty POS up, and I try to pry it off... no such luck. I can get it seperated aout 3/4" with a prybar, but no more. I get some light in there and I can see as I pry a bit more the whole carrier is moving up and down too, so Im thinking the pinion housing bearing is pressed onto the pinion shaft, but how to I get it off?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! :willy_nil Theres no room for a puller in there, barely room for a small screwdriver, and Ill just snap it if I try to pry it. Do i need to heat it??? I have no idea what to do. Please help!

Thanks

Jim

You can one of two things:

Back off the shoes thru the adjuster slots.

Or cut the "nails" with some side cutters.

Then your going to need to break the rust at the axle hub where it's bonded to the drum. In a worse case condition your going to need a "BIG" gear puller. After you get the drum off you can get the axles out from the backing plate. There are no c-clips.

Well I have the drums dis-assembled already, but I can pull the backing plates and then the axles will just pull out?? Ill have to give it a try monday.

I think that's the same general design as a Ford 9 in. a socket thru the hole in the axel flange will remove the bearing retainers, then the axel will slide out. RED

Do the axles have to come out to get the drums off? If not, backoff the adjusters on the shoes, then wack the drums witha hammer. This should push the shoes in so the drums can slide off.

I have the drums off, Im trying to get the backing plates off.

I made a post on pirate 4x4 (i figured they would know) and I was told to basically hammer the axles outwards a few inches and the 3rd member (pinion housing) will come out... elroy was right, no c clips.

Also, Red, can you elaborate on what you were saying before?

Thanks guys

Is there a pin in the spider gears? Remember one phylosophy (cant spell) when dealing with mechanics, man made it- man can take it apart. Usually by this stage, you look for gremlins and unknown life forms...LOL

.....elroy was right.........

Thank you. Elroy appreciates that. Feel free to repeat that as many times as you see fit. I have made a concerted effort through out my life not to be a dumb ***. I will continue to read learn and pay attention. Especially when someone is speaking who knows what they are talking about.

He said the same thing I did, just in a little more detail. Elroy would be please to elaborate on the procedure just for you:

OK,you got the drum off right?. There are probably two or three holes drilled thru the axle flange between a couple of the studs. Take your cheapest Chinese socket on an extension and stick it. Thru the flange hole that is and remove the nuts that are holding down the outer bearing retainer. After you get all the nuts off the axle "should" slide right out, bringing the bearing retainer with it. If not get out your best Taiwan slide hammer. Forget that, put the drum back on over the lug studs BACK WARDS and run on 2 or 3 lug nuts on like only one or two turns. Use the drum as a slide hammer. The axle should pop right out. Repeat on the other side. Just like them junkie 9 inch fords (of which I happen to have 7, some on the ground some on the shelf). A very fine well engineered system with THREE pinion bearings.

Sorry about the attitude, I hope when you show for class Monday you have the right attitude.
