I found this forum from doing a search about rebuilding impacts. I have been reading threw past threads about rebuilding them and have a few questions. I recently inherited a couple of impacts and air ratchets from my uncle that had a service garage for years. The impacts are a mac AW434, snap on IM6100, matco MT1258TH, and an ingersoll rand 231XP. The ratchets are matco MT1838, blue point AT205, mac AR2765, blue point AT200D. These have been sitting in his home garage for about 5 years now since he retired and are in need of some TLC, I put some oil in them and hooked them up and they all seem to work but I would like to go threw them and give them a tune up if needed.

I took them apart and did a quick check mainly to see the parts inside and only broken part I found was a pin in the matco MT1258's hammer mechanism was broke in half. What should I be looking for when checking the vanes and bearings and other parts? What are the main "wear" parts to replace in impacts and ratchets? And what kind of grease and oil should I use on these guns, I know some of them take a grease and some take an oil but not sure what kind to use.

I see snap on sells parts piece by piece for their guns and matco and IR sell rebuilt kits but couldn't find anything for the mac gun. I noticed that some of the IR and matco and mac guns look very similar. I read that IR makes the guns for the other companies. If some guns are "related" to each other can the parts be interchanged? I know the IR kits are only about 25 bucks so seems like a good investment to make sure the gun is working at full power.

Does anyone have tips or advice when rebuilding these guns? I took them apart and put them back together and that isn't a problem, just don't really know what to look for to fix or what to lube and what not to lube. I also noticed some small scratches on the cylinder of one of the guns, is there a hone that I can use to smooth the walls out?

Any advice or experience you might be able to share will be greatly appreciated! Also are some of these guns better than others?

AFAIK, the Mac stuff in most cases were/are made by IR; my Mac die grinder was made by Florida Pneumatic.

That's good to know. I would think I can use the rebuild kits from IR then, just have to figure out what models match each other.

Thanks
