Anyone ever build one? I would think it would be easier for moving stuff like an engine block in and out of the truck bed. Its a pain to load and unload the floor hoist. I know they make bed mounted hoists, but having something to slide into the hitch once or twice a year would be handy

They are around for cheaper than I can build one.
I've never needed one, but have heartily contemplated them.
I have come to the conclusion that to be more than effective, to be correct of design, they need adjustable outriggers.

Outriggers are an easy addition that would make many degrees of better.

I think this because of the twist put on a lowly hitch receptacle when you have a 500 lbs something on a three foot long beam swing it in to a truck bed.
I'm not sure that 1500ftlbs of torque on a single receptacle is the best plan to move something that is dangling four feet off the ground.

I agree, a normal 1/2 ton factory hitch would not be up to lifting such loads so far out. Aftermarket sure, as long as you are in the ballpark of a 2,000 lb. tongue weight rating.

I do not see the reason.
All you are doing is replacing one leg of a tripod with the hitch.
Build a tripod and you can use it without the truck.

But that one leg of the tripod is using the rest of the truck’s weight to hold it in place. ;)

Yea, That one from northern tool is showing a 1000 lbs capacity! Thats not too shabby and I probably could use that for my business since i am always loading heavy stuff in and out of my truck

That's pretty slick. I just may consider getting that.
That is pretty slick and about what I was thinking but without the cylinder, I thought some type of crank winch, small atv winch, maybe a small chain fall.

looks like its as much work as setting up the hoist
. The more I look at that,it does look like a bit of work to set up.

I like the bumper stored lift, very easy to use, anyone know the price? I didn't ask for a quote.

Here is a pickup bed hydraulic lift I adapted an electric 120 volt winch to, to power up & power down and have mounted in the loft area of my garage to help store bulky or heavy items. I had fabricated a "shoebox" of 3/16" plate steel to mount the lift into a joist bay. The winch and lift are both rated at 2000 lbs. The "shoebox" is bolted on 3 sides with 3/4" bolts, one end has a 3/4" fastener which goes through a 1/2" wall thickness 4" X 8" box beam, which is the structural member for the open end of the loft, which covers the rear half of a 21' X 23' two-car garage. The 4" X 8" beam is welded into two flitch plates cast into concrete columns at either end which connect directly to the poured concrete footer and tie beam. I don't plan to lift anything even 1/4 of the 2000 lbs ratings. If I did want to lift something over 500 lbs., I would use a lolly column temporarily directly beneath the spindle of the hydraulic lift column.

I agree that it does look like a bit of a PIA to setup but for the price that thing could come in real handy at times.

I have this one that I got off of eBay a few years back. It slides right into the receiver hitch. There is a dead leg that goes into the small section of square tubing near the base to keep from exceeding the tongue capacity of the hitch. It has worked really well and even has a bearing in the rotating portion so it's easy to swing into the bed.

The downsides are that you have to lift it up really high to clear the taillights/side of the bed. The weight capacity is 500lbs, but its adjustable length so it varies based on reach. The last downside is that the cable hand crank was kinda weak and got bound up in the pulleys. I've since replaced it.
