Was browsing Craigslist not too long ago in search of a larger chest combo since my tool collection has grown quite a bit, and happened upon a large 40" Proto combo. The guy was only asking $650, but I talked him down to $450!

It came with lots of tools as well including: full socket/bit socket set of Westward, 1/4" & 3/8" Craftsman USA sets, assorted Craftsman/SK/K-D ratchets & wrenches & sockets, 1/4" Armstrong hex/bit sockets, Westward Tool Sets (Locking Pliers, Nut Drivers, Stubbies, Punches, Chisels, Combo Wrenches, Pliers, Hammers, etc.)

Basically, it was an incredible deal, but a pain to get back home! Had to drive about an hour and a half with my buddy in his subie, and it barely fit, but we managed! Totally worth it, and the score of my lifetime!

I'll give you a YOU **** for that one.

I love the drawer layout of that box and to get some tools with it is defiantly worthy.

I think it ***** when you walk into a stone deal, and then beat the guy up, and then have to brag about it like it makes you some kind of special. If he had it for sale cheap, he probably needed the money, and for you to kick him in the teeth when he is down says all I need to know about you. Sleep well, tonight, guy, because you screwed another human being. Could have been your kid, or mother, or wife.

Sure...but that's one possibility. Jump to conclusions much?

Well, he says the guy was "only" asking $650, but he talked him down to $450. I am sure I jump to conclusions about as much as the next guy, but when you start a post out with gratuitous information that has no intrinsic purpose to the point of the post, I think it is fairly safe to say that that is the part that he likes best, and therefore identifies him to me as a bottom feeder who takes advantage of others and is proud of that accomplishment. In today's economic climate, I can't think why someone who bought tools (so knows their value) and offers them for sale cheap and then takes a hit, demonstrating desperation, would do so if they didn't need the money. To beat that person up and be proud of it is morally deficient, in my opinion. I'm not going to change him, so probably should not continue the discussion, but people who can do that make me mad, and I reacted.

No; I get deals sometimes, too. But I never beat up on someone who makes a fair deal to start with. I am not greedy, and take no pleasure from taking someone else's grocery money, or rent, or whatever reason they offer a deal, and if I did, I sure wouldn't brag about it like I deserve a medal for it. Look at the tool list. The Armstrong hex set is $100. he beat that guy plumb up, and is gleeful about it. That is a moral stand I refuse to make. If he can, good for him, and I hope he doesn't feel the other end of that.

Troll much?

All the seller has to do is say no.

:headshake Here's a man that doesn't know how to dance The Dance. :headshake

At any point either one of them could have walked away if they didn't like the terms. In the end, both got what they ultimately wanted. Nobody was mugged in a dark alley.

You're jumping to several different conclusions, but the bottom line is, they're irrelevant. If I go to look at something on Craigslist...or anywhere for that matter...and I agree upon a price with a seller, it's a deal between both of us. Whatever the reason this guy is selling the stuff for the price that he is, is his business. Whether he desperately needs money for rent, medical bills, bail, whatever, it's his business, not mine. If the offer is too low, then the seller can refuse and either insist on a higher price, or there's no deal. It's that simple.

The only exception would be if the potential buyer had a strong feeling the item(s) were stolen. If I was in that situation, I would walk away. Otherwise, it's fair game.

FYI, when I know a deal is a steal, I don't bargain, I agree to pay the asking price because I know there's likely to be a line of people behind me all ready to do the same thing. But if you want to try and get the price lower in that situation, that's your business.

Thanks everyone! (minus Ricky Joe)

Ricky Joe, what is wrong with you? Who do you think you are making such grandiose assumptions about my morality and actions? They're completely unfounded, ridiculous and downright arrogant. The situation was NOTHING like you had described, whatsoever. It was a guy selling off his buddy's old tools & chest! He had gone through all of it and kept whatever he needed/wanted and knew darn well what he had. People like you, Ricky Joe, make me sick; You preach about morality and how we should life, and go around chastising others before you even know a thing about the people. How about instead of insulting people on here, you go reflect upon your own actions?

True; I don't "dance the dance". Human dignity is more important to me than a few dollars. If you don't get it, that is ok. We each make our way in this world the best we know how. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That came from a much higher plane than apparently this group is on. I will say no more, but wish you each the best, and that love will one day enter your hearts. Samuel Butler wrote that the two things a Christian could not stand were to see his religion denigrated, or to see it practiced.

I don't know what you mean by "troll". I'm just a dumb mechanic, who can't dance, and has compassion for fellow human beings.

Wow, GJ evangelism. I think that's a first for me.

Looks like the OP should've offered the seller a grand, you know, just to be a nice guy.

Nice deal you got.

I agree with Ricky Joe - when someone is asking a too low of a price, give them what they are asking, if not more.

Not only is it the right thing to do, but it pays big rewards in the future! - I have bought several things on Craigslist and other places that were way under-priced and gave the guy a bit more than he was asking, and now guess who they call first when they have another insanely low bargain to sell!

It's called karma!

I agree to a point when ever I come across a killer extreme deal I pay what the guy is asking because I feel better at the end of the day plus I **** at haggling. You may like the thrill of the hunt which is fine and your right when you say the seller can always say no thank you to the offer. I just feel like if you know it's a good deal no major bargaining should happen. I guess I'm not a business man I just like to think I can help others at times. And Op great score on the tools I'm happy you got a box you'll enjoy I'm not trying to attack you just trying to set this thread from flying off the wheels. When it should just be some tool **** pictures.

....maybe the guy was selling it for crack money?

In that case your morally obligated to pay as little as possible to help curb his substance abuse.

(that was sarcasm)

WTF is wrong with this place?

Preaching....questioning a guys morals. Is this Garage Journal or the What Would Jesus Do forums?

3/4 of all CL adds I see list a price as OBO. That's what I do....make an offer. I never get pushy...or pressure anyone.....just a simple "hey would you take $***"?

But hell...even if it says nothing or even firm it doesn't hurt to shoot a bit less. The words no never hurt anyone.

Recently saw a gas snow blower in really good shape offered at $25.....good enough deal I paid the man and left happy.

Each deal is different....buy or sell....as long as the two people involved came to a mutual agreement then everyone else matters not.

I mustve missed the part where he had a gun to the seller's head...

I had to check your location to see if you were near me, lol. I haven't seen a (name brand) rolling box for less than $1500 EMPTY. Haha.
