I have recently purchased several new ratchets, Armstrong locking flex, williams long 3/8 drive, compact 3/8 snap on, gearwrench 3/8 and a xl120, Titan round head compact flex, another craftsman USA thin profile, a craftsman priminum 3/8 and I have several others too. These all get used for different purposes. Most of the purchases I have been happy with, but some are just lacking. The gearwrench ratchets with all the good reviews here I expected it to be better. The xl120 I just purchased, the head is thicker, wider and has more back drag than all but my Williams ratchet. My Armstrong ratchets are so much better its worth the extra $10. The only good thing about the gearwrench ratchet is that Sears has such poor customer service so when I complained to paypal they gave me a full refund and I didn't have to return the ratchet. That was not what I was asking for but that what I got form paypal. The Titan, a compact round swivel head is a great design and like the size but it is total junk. It would slip, reverse direction or just go into neutral and not ratchet or drive a socket. At least the gearwrench is useable compaired to the Titan although the gearwrench will probably be a backup ratchet in my portable toolkit. The Williams has the most back drag but it has its uses, it is the lightest strongest long handle 3/8 ratchet I have. I use it in my portable toolkit, I don't want to carry a 1/2 in drive setup. It gets used on really tough bolts like the U bolts I needed to remove of a 66 barracuda. I cleaned the threads and oiled them but the bolts got so hot that the kroil would smoke. I was pulling on that ratchet really hard not and a single glitch, all 8 bolts were smoking hot. My craftsman long handle 3/8 would have failed, has failed several times on lesser jobs. I score the Titan about a 2 out of 10 and the gearwrench a 5 out of 10

I guess you should have gotten the 60 tooth or 84 tooth Gearwrench. The 120xp does have a slightly thicker head to accomadate the twin pawls. Whereas the gearwrench 60 tooth is identical to the Armstrong Maxx ratchet internally. Perhaps appying a couple of drops of 3 in one oil would help.
If you have the 36 tooth williams, it will smooth out with use. You may also want to check that the gear cover isn't too tight putting pressure on the gears. Sorry you're not happy with you Gearwrench ratchets. I own all of the ratchets you mentioned except for the titan and find my gearwrench to be the ones I grab first.
