Puttin in boxes & recep's in the shop end of my garage, in one corner where I would like to put a box, there is a strong potential that down the road Its where I put my heating oil tank. The tank would cover that recep if I indeed place it there. Is that gonna be a problem?

Not with me, I don't think the oil guy would care, but the person attempting to use the outlet may speak of your heritage if it is blocked.

the only real problem i see is if there is a problem in the box. you won't be able to get to it to repair it. if you put it in make it the end of the line so you can just abandon it if you have to.

Junction boxes shall be installed so that the wiring contained in them can be rendered accessible without removing any part of the building.

Do you meet this requirement?
Could you access, remove the outlet, and inspect the wiring if the need arises in the future?

I would say if thats your future plan save the hassle and don't put it there, put a double box a few feet short of where you plan it will sit on each side (go measure one the size your planning on to see) and make due with a short cord if needed. I wouldn't want one there if I thought it would mean I can't get the most room possible in the room (lost real estate).

I doubt the code would be an issue unless the tank is considered permanent, akin to a refrigerator outlet behind the refrigerator or behind washer and dryers/ovens etc. the unused 220 outlet behind my gas stove would be a code violation in the same manner if this was the case.

Trick question..LOL. Using the equipment I have on hand, shouldnt be an issue. Not something I'd want to do every other day, but something I wouldnt loose sleep over.

Code wise, thats what I was thinking as well...It would be easier to move the heating oil tank for me then it would be to move the bedroom set we have which blocks 2 outlets...tractor doesnt fit in the house :lol_hitti

Regardless of code WHY bother putting it there if this is the case??? Just put it higher so it will be just above the tank later. Like 60" or so.

The question herein lies: "Is the oil tank part of the building?"

What criteria are we using to judge?
I'd say no, its not part of the building...its clearly "OK" to have an outlet hidden behind a massive dresser or other large furniture object.

2 guys in the house to work on that recep behind the dresser or 2 guys out in the garage to work on the recep behind the oil tank. I bet I could have the oil tank moved before the 2nd drawer of clothes is pulled out of the dresser.

As for what I'll do...I'll omit the recep, and put a 2 gang recep next to the welder outlet (as seen in my HD recep post).

HAHAHAHA...I'd take that bet.

Make wire you have unions installed on the 2" rigid black iron pipes coming out of the top of the tank.
