Receptables mounted to dry wall?

Hi - Should receptacles be mounted flush with the sheetrock or indented and by how much? I have a contractor that put some in and some are almost 3/8" deep past the sheetrock. Can you help me?

The outlet screw tabs should be even with or right on the surface of the face of the drywall for the cover plates to fit properly.

I'll add that if outlet box is recessed and not flush with face of drywall, (beyond 1/8" IIRC) you are "supposed" to install a "sleeve". Arlington and other manufacturers make them.

Use outlet spacers available at any hardware store-

If he cut the Sheetrock out right you don't need the spacers,the pic pattenp put up is the way it should be,the tabs over the Sheetrock. If it's cut out to big then you need spacers to keep the outlet from getting pushed into the wall.
