receptacle for free standing stove?

I am in the final stages of finishing the apartment above my garage. I have 6-3 wire running to the kitchen area from the service panel for a future stove. I know it will be a free standing, all electric, but am not sure which receptacle to install as I do not have a stove yet.

Is there a specific receptacle that is the most common? Is there one that will accept any free standing stove? I would like to install it and get this item checked off.

Also, I noticed in my house that the receptacle is in the lower left hand (looking at the stove) corner, and it seems that there is an area open in the back of the stove for this. Is this an industry norm or should I just wait for the stove to wire it.

Sorry for the dumb questions, and I do have a few extra feet of wire in the wall just in case

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and look at the ones on the floor. I think most stoves have a recess all the way across the back for the receptacle and cable to tuck into, but you need to see for yourself.

Thanks Charles, that is a good idea. Finally found some forums that address the same issue. Looks like even folks who have been doing it for years have different approaches. Guess it is one item that can wait if it must.

Around here 4 prong is code and since I’ve been shopping for a stove for a while now I’ve noticed each manufacturer has different clearance areas for the outlet. Take a look at the online manual for the types of stoves you are considering. They all have a section detailing where the outlet can be.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will go with the flush mount 14-50R using a dual gang box. Back side of wall is not finished (stairwell) so outlet installation will be easy. From what I have read, position outlet about 6" off the floor to center of outlet, just to the side of center of stove unit.

Internet research is great, but the feedback from trusted people on this board is better!

Route the wire so that in the future you could move the wire to fit. As long as it is not at the outside edge or directly in the middle, you should be good to go
