Recessed fire extinguisher cabinets

I'm in the process of designing my garage and wanted to install some recessed fire extinguisher cabinets in different locations. I think it would just be a cleaner look than having the extinguisher hanging on a wall bracket or sitting on the floor. Does anybody have recommendations for some good ones or possibly some photos to share?

The dream of course would be to put a full fire suppression system in but a limited budget precludes that.

I can't really recommend any certain kind but as far as finding one, I'd suggest your local fire extinguisher company. You canfind them in the yellow pages. If they don't offer them, they should be able to lead you in the proper direction.

I've been looking on ebay,

Besides being a cleaner look they might prevent accidentally knocking the extinguisher from the hanger. When in college I worked at a grocery store. Unloading a truck something came down a ramp, hit an extinguisher, it hit the floor, and pin broke and filled the back room with powder.

I was looking at the ones on Grainger but without personal opinions on quality its tuff to tell how good or bad they are. I suppose I could also just build my own boxes and paint them fire engine red. Some of the manufacturers are very proud of their boxes judging by the prices!

I found a stainless steel one at my area "Re-Store" for dirt cheap. I'm not sure what you may have around you, but try looking for one of those places that takes fluorescent bulbs, lighting fixtures, plumbing stuff. Not only can you find used items, but new stuff as well. Amazing what all you can find for little or nothing.

Only thing I didn't do enough thinking about is how deep the cabinet is compared to my garage walls. Since the cabinet is deeper than my walls, I'll have to build it out a bit to make it fit and look nice. It won't be completely flush, but I'll try to be creative and put some cabinets or something around it.

Don't forget that you will be loosing insulating value if you recess something in an outside wall. If you're trying to heat that garage then it would be a consideration.

That's a good point. The garage will be segmented into an unheated 3 car garage in the front part and a heated motorcycle/workshop garage in the rear. I was planning on placing 2 extinguishers between the doors in the front and maybe I can recess a couple into the partition wall in the back. Along with electrical outlets and water valves, I don't think you can ever have to many fire extinguishers.

If you build your own use glass in door. On job, cabinet glass front had sticker on it to break glass in emergency. Someone did break it. Dingy maintenance guy replaced with plexaglass. :lol_hitti

I don't know the cost but being your from ny you could called Ken at tarpstop in Toledo Ohio for pricing or 4 state trucks in Joplin, Missouri either one will ship them. There made in Italy, I had there storage boxes on my old trailer and loved them.

Oh, yeah, 2 sq feet would kill all the insulating value.

I don't believe I ever used the word 'kill'. Fact is, you will lose insulation thickness behind it along with putting a hole in the warm side of the wall. All for purely aesthetic purposes. Is it enough to kill the deal for him? Don't know - that's why I stated that it was a 'consideration' :D
