Getting close to framing up our new house and garage and am trying to figure out what I am going to do for lighting. I have settled on using 7 fixtures with 4 4' bulbs and if possible would like to have them recessed in the ceiling. Problem I am running into is finding fixtures designed for this purpose. I have found these - http://www.goodmart.com/products/1101619.htm but believe they are designed for a drop ceiling and would not meet code if I were to have insulation in contact with them (is this a correct assumption?). Where can I get recessed fixtures intended for this use?

Good question Bojans. I was looking at doing the same thing....either recessed, or surface mounted to the drywall ceiling, for the reasons you mentioned.

I made my own in the last house
standard 4 ft shop lights
cut openings in the drywall ceiling
installed OSB on top of the rafters
attached the shop lights to the OSB
installed trim around the opening to hold the plastic replacement difusers

I used a 2 bulb 4ft. T8 with cover, recessed into my drywall ceiling that they were made for. I purchased them locally in PA at a supply house. They were made in Philly area. They worked great.

Check with an electric supply house. They are readily available. A frame mounts to the rafters or joists above the ceiling, and is wired. Then the drywall guys do their thing. Then the light units are installed. A perfectly neat install. You see them in some homes in kitchens or in commercial applications. The diffuser hinges down to give access to the bulbs. We have drywalled ceilings in all of the restrooms in our factory (for security reasons and "to avoid potential problems" with peeking tom's...)

They all have recessed two bulb fluorescents. Works out great.

Good luck.

Home Depot has them. They are called "troffers"...

http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...langId=-1&catalogId=10053&productId=100180403

Note that Home Depot has two different types. One is for use with dropped ceilings. The other is for use with "regular" ceilings, e.g., sheetrock nailed to ceiling joists. The above link doesn't say which one it is, but they look almost identical. My local Home Depot had both types. If you read the boxes carefully, you can tell which one is which. I forgot the actual terminology they used to describe the difference, but it was obvious what they were talking about.

Regards,
Ira
