recessed lighting

need to add some to my kitchen. just 3 cans. Does anyone have a recommendation for good-better-best?
LED or oldskewl is fine with me. Should be IC too.

If kitchen size matters...it is 14x8

I use the remodel cans from the warehouse store. I see no reason why they aren't sufficient. There are more trim styles if you shop the Net. That's where the choices begin, the trim and what style of lamp.

No reason to avoid the big box store as Zeke has stated with their selection. They are all going to be "approved".

I've used both Commercial Electric and Halo from Home Depot without any issues. Attached pic is of my kitchen after I installed some old work 4" halogens and a dimmer. Easy as pie.

Your kitchen looks good and lighting system in kitchen is just perfect. Last week, i have got home lighting system from Canadian Omega Home Automation And Electrical. They just change my home look and now i got smart home.

You can get the cans/trim cheaper online than at the big-box stores.

I bought a sample 4" Halo Air Tight Can and baffle at HD as a proof of concept and then ordered the balance online for much less.

Just something to consider.

"Much less"?? I hardly think so.
Ordering three regular recessed a cans and trims online is silly. The $5 you might save is made up in convenience.


IMO only go with Halo, Juno, Lightolier, or equiv.
I would never buy Commercial Electric cans and I simply refuse to install Emerald.
Bottom line, stick to name brands, not big box house brands.

They can keep ChiCom Electric & all the off breed brand cans. Name brand cans are my preferred w/ Halo my 1st choice, Lightolier, & Juno not as common.

I just installed 6 new work halo ICAT cans in my existing ceiling this weekend. Lots of fun up there in the 16" of FG insulation. I like the new work cans and always choose halo.

Trouble is that these cans are not air-tight at all. Maybe I'll seal them up.

Looks much much better than the old t8 fixtures. Placing the cans is very important. Half the lumens but properly placed, spaced, makes much more "light". Spend lots of time thinking about locations.

Oh and a coffee can lid, plastic from folgers, is exactly 6-3/8" which makes it the perfect template for the cutouts if you don't own the 50$ dedicated hole saw.

Great info guys. Looks like I will check out the Halo line. Trying to save pennies now for all the hardware. How ownership is not cheap.
