Recessed/Pot Lighting Question

I am a bit unclear as to the different types of fixtures available some are for 'new installation' and some are rated for 'retrofit installation' in insulated ceilings.

I would like to buy some of these fixtures to augment some lighting around my workbench. The fixtures will be installed in an insulated drywall ceiling, can I use these fixtures directly against the insulation or will I have to put one of those plastic covers over the box to keep the insulation away from the heat?

Also do you folks think that adding these lights is a good idea? I think it will be a good starter project for me as I want to add recessed lighting throughout my home at a later time. I have experience installing light fixtures and hooking up the electrical.

If you want the can light to touch insulation, you must make sure to get IC (Insulation Contact) rated cans and it should say right on them. You also probably want to get remodel cans instead of new construction cans since the ceiling is already finished.

New installation has "legs" that attach to the ceiling joists. "Retro fit" or "remodel" housings clamp to the drywall.

Make sure you get an IC rated housing for anything coming in direct contact with insulation.

In my house I installed New install cans because I have a ranch home (1 story) with access to the joists from the attic.
