I have about half a dozen reciever hitches that are lying around on my garage floor. INeed to get them off the floor & put away. How about some ideas/pictures on how you guys store these things.

Why do you have six? Sounds like a lot!

I have three that I keep in a small Action Packer in the back of my Grand Cherokee. (1-7/8", 2", and hook). That way I never bring the wrong one. Then I have another rusty POS somewhere in the garage. Sorry, don't have a creative storage idea other than keeping a couple in each vehicle you tow with, then just get rid of the rest.

Another action packer tote person here. I have 3 draw bars:
- 2 5/16" ball on a 2.5" bar
- 2 5/16" ball on a 2" bar
- 2" ball on a 2" bar

All 3 in the tote, with spare pins/clips, spare safety chains (hooks on both ends), wiring adapters (7-6, 7-4, 4-clips), and the 2.5" to 2" reducer for my truck. If I'm picking up an unknown trailer (helping a friend) I grab the whole tote. Otherwise, I just pull out what I need that trip. The tote tucks away on a shelf in the corner, since I really don't need it that often.

I have a pile of milkcrates as loose drawers at the bottom of my benches. In one of them I keep hitches, pins, loose balls, pintles, and anything else that needs to go in a 2" receiver.

I use a metal box that a grilling utensil set came in. Fits the receiver and two balls without any problems and keeps the rust/grease from getting all over the truck.

I have a similar problem - so far they're all sitting on a shelf taking up too much space.
I thought about cutting holes in a shelf top so the reciever could fit down in vertically.

I eventually got one of the triple ball recievers - I keep that one in the truck.

i keep my selection of a 3.5in drop with 2in ball, an adjustable with 2in ball, adjustable with 1 7/8 ball, and a 3in drop with 2 5/16 ball, as well as a pintle hitch, and a reciver mount for a d-ring shackle, in a tote box i keep in the bed of the truck most of the time. its water proof, but contains my recovery gear, fluids and some other stuff. in my old truck i kept everything in a grenade box under the back seat

All I did is drill a few 1/2 holes in one of the 4x6's that make up my main walls, and hang them thru the hitch pin hole. In the big truck i have one of each under the seat with a few pins in the glove box. in the Jeep I have a recovery ring, tree saver, strap, ****** block, chain, and glove in an action pack, straped to the tailgate on my CJ. some of you guys have entirely too many of these.

i keep mine in a rubbermaid bin. it's not strong enough to pickup with the stuff in it so it is always where it is suppose to be, on a shelf in the garage. since i tow with 3 different trucks and 3 different trailers i have 3 receiver inserts with various drop heights and 4 balls.

I have bins in the back of the Bronco that were molded into the back cargo area. They were the perfect size to hold the 2 receivers that I use. Works great and they are up off the floor of the cargo area.

Rick - do you use any kind of grease on the receiver when you install it?

I've been using fluid film protectant with good results - I've had some trucks with recievers that were left in place for a long time by the p/o - rust made them one piece - even pulling against a tree with no pin in place was no match for the corrosion - I had to replace the hitch.

I pull it out once a month or so and spray some Kroil on it and thats pretty much it for maintenance.Durring the spring, summer, fall it gets pulled quite regularly due to having trailers with all 3 ball sizes :D.

Do you ever hit your knee or shin on it while it's in the receiver?
How about your wife? :shocking:

I have had a hitch in a receiver for so long now that its second nature to give the back of the truck a " wide birth " :D. SWMBO has gotten her shin a few times and has learned " dont walk behind my truck " :D.

That's one of the worst bruises I've ever had on my shin - walking into a big weight distributing hitch... OUCH.

I've got so much to clear out and organize - organizing the hitches isn't a priority - but now I'm thinking about that too.... I need a couple months off with pay.

Terminology correction here. The RECEIVER is the part that is permanently installed on the vehicle. The BALL CARRIER or BALL MOUNT is the part that you are discussing as to where to keep it. I think everyone keeps calling the Ball Mount the Receiver.

You are correct Sir! When I started this thread I thought I had it right. Ok ball mount it is!

Anyway this is what I did to resolve my problem: I came up with this storage idea of hanging them between wall studs. I got a little carried away with the router. Now they are out of the way, at belly level and nicer to pick out or put away.

This is the dual cut out for lighter ball mounts:

Here is the single set up for my weight distribution ball mount:
