I'm way too cheap to throw out all the old spray paint that I have that has separated. I've been looking at spray can shakers and while they get the job done I kind of want a solution that I can turn on and walk away for 20 minutes or so. The reciprocating saw attachments don't do that and the drill kind of could be rigged to but I am more thinking I might build my own.

I have some ideas on where to scavenge a root reciprocating mechanism but wanted to get the thoughts of the hive mind before I pull the trigger on anything.

I think I've seen an attachment for a sawzall. Might have been a DIY thing.
My experience is it's a a waste of time with 90% of old paint.

I leave them out in the sun to warm up, then shake them with a sawzall. works really well! Just make sure the strap is tight on the can... :cautious:

It's in his shop thread in this metal fab & techniques section. I'm not sure what page but he has posts of the builds. I think Mike or someone else in there posted links to the parts.

Thanks @larry4406

Works like a charm. Turn it on and walk away while it shakes.

Got a build thread for that?

Here is an index I put together of Mikes awesome paint shaker build.

Here’s the thread on a rotary agitator I built from a 60 rpm gearmotor. It quietly clicky-clacks along at 120 times a minute and is controlled by a spring wound 15 minute countdown timer. I often wonder why it took me so long in life to build something for this purpose.

Nope. Long ways. Slow enough spindle rpm that I can hear the ball rolling around. Started doing that after watching Adam Savage use a drill in a similar fashion. Didn't think it would work but it seems to work fine so far. I typically let it run for a couple minutes.

Ah, I was thinking 3k rpm, not 3 😂

I started out rolling my spray paint in the metal lathe, but built my rotary unit to save the lathe wear for more important things.
Someone back in the day taught me to set it in a 3 jaw but not square and turn it at low RPM. That doesn't seem to do much for me. I want the up and down

I’ve had an idea for awhile that no doubt already exists.
Ball bearing drawer sliders for the can holdingbpart part.
Windshield wiper motor for the recip part.
Toaster oven timer.
Set it and forget it until you’re ready.

I have trouble believing drawer slides would hold up to that

The ball falls the length of the can in the one I built twice per second and I feel it does a better job of mixing than when I was letting it roll in the lathe. A can gets latched into it when a project like blasting something to paint is started and it mixes while I do other things. The 15 minute timer is nice to be able to set it and forget it as many times as you want and it is also quiet in operation.

This is GJ
Get an old corded hedge trimmer and chop /modify / weld away
I've picked up good corded models at garage sales for $5 [nobody wants them]

I haven't had a spray paint can that works in 30 years. I just quit buying it.
I have a few cans of 99 cent spray paint that were sold at Roses department store 35 years ago that have been flooded for days 25 years ago and still work. I just used some of it last week to touch up a hand cart.
