Best guess is it's for the nuts that secure headlight switches to dashboards of 1960s-vintage vehicles, or some similar devices.

I’ve owned a ton of 60’s and 70’s GM cars, but I just can’t picture it. The bezel sockets I’ve seen are hollow like a regular socket.A hollow nut with external threads that has a removable stem like a GM light switch.

Not saying it isn’t a bezel socket, I’ve just never seen one like it.
