Recomend me a set of micrometer standards

I need a set of micrometer standards/gauge blocks/calibration rods. My set of mics is due for some maintainence (clean and re-lube) and I would like to check and calibrate them if necessary. I need a set that includes 1"-5" at least. They need to be more accurate than a tape measure but don't need to be NIST traceable.

Are THESE any good? Is it worth $100 to check my $25 set of used Starrett mics?

Find someone who sales precision tools and ask them what it would cost to have them checked and adjusted. If they can't maybe they will let you check them yourself or could recommend a business that certifies precision tools. If you end up going to a certification company tell them that you would just like to have them checked and adjusted if needed, but don't need them certified. Do you know anybody that works at a machine shop that they could take them in and check them to standards that the the shop probably has .

You really only need something of a known size. Bearing races are real good for size. If you can make a set of rods and have them measured by someone with a known good tool then you have a set. It doesn't have to 1" or 2" or3". It just has to be a known size. 1.674 will work if it is known to be that size. Spending that $100 on a set of standards is a lot.

go to a used machenery place
they will have lots of trashed mics so perhaps they have some spare standards
also, look into buying a set of 1-2-3 blocks they go on sale for about $20 and they are precision ground

I see used Starrett standards on eBay regularly..

You can buy a set of 0-6" Chicom mics with standards for a lot less than $100.
