I'm looking for advice on a lighting system for my aplication. 40X40 shop with 16' ceilings and i would like it to be bright. As you all no lighting can make a big difference. I like to wash and polish my toys, fabricate, and some times paint my projects and some lighting makes it hard to tell how the finish is turning out untill you get it into good lighting or sunlight. any ideas?

I have heard the number 150 lumens/SF thrown around a lot. Start with that and you can always add more.

With ceilings that high and with you wanting to polish and clean the sides of toys, I would consider some wall mounted lights. Flourescents don't care if they are horizontal and side light can be very effective compared with your 16' ceiling.

I'd also think you would want to hang the lights lower than 16' for ideal coverage. A number of the light mfg's have light design guides/applications on their sites.

These are high bay FL's

I didn't buy these but bought the following link but would require chain mounting a few feet to bring light down to an acceptable level. May depend on your garage dacor.
I have 10 1/2' ceilings and they give me plenty of light. These with a roll of chain would be considerably cheaper.

Also do a search on this site for other types of lighting. Stick with T8's IMO. They have pretty good pricing.

I wanted good light as well, and just had high efficiency T-8's installed on 14' ceiling. It's very bright and am happy with them...
