Hi all,
I am a new guy here, this forum is awesome!!!!!!!!!

I want to do something with my garage floor, approximately 850 sq feet. I would like to do the checker board floor somehow. I can not afford the Racedeck type products.

I have seen VCT mentioned here several places but have not been able to find a price. Anyone know? I thought I saw that it was available from Home Depot so I went there tonight and they had not heard of it.

Home Depot guy did try to sell me some peel and stick flooring. Said if I cleaned the floor good it would hold up. Thoughts? It looked pretty cheap to me and did not appear to be something that would hold up even to minor wear.

I would like to hear any suggestions you have. I am trying to avoid the epoxy floor. More for looks than any other reason. I really want the black and white checkerboard! I only have about $500.00 to spend. Is there anything that I should get or would it be better to wait until I can afford the better stuff?

Thanks!

VCT is available through Lowes and Home Depot. You want to go with something like Armstrong Excelon or Mannington Essentials / Designer Essentials with a seperate adhesive. The self stick stuff won't hold up in a garage environment.

The tile itself goes between 55 and 80 cents a square foot depending on color and whether its a special order or not. You'll also have to budget for adhesive, wax, tools, and rental of a flooring roller. $500 is going to be tough to pull off. My local Home Depot and Lowes usually offer 20% off if you sign up for their credit card. Sign up, use it once to get your discount, and then cancel it.

Thanks, I finally figured out what VCT stands for, I thought it was a brand of tile or something. I think this is the route I want to go, I will find the money someplace! I am going to check out a new Lowes that just opened about 25 miles from me Friday.

Thanks for the quick response!

In reading these various post tonight I think I mentally spent about 20K on my garage!

Lowes is currently running a 20% off special order flooring promotion. They typically only stock two to four colors, so if you can find colors you want at http://www.armstrong.com/commflooringna/product_details.jsp?category=vct&item_id=381 that they don't have on the shelf, you can save some money if you buy them soon since the special order price is the same as the stocked price. You may not have a choice for black, but there are several different whites to choose from so you can probably find one you like and they don't stock. You can probably combine this with any credit card promotion they're running.

From your tag name I am guessing you drive a Vette? be careful with high performance tires on VCT tiles as they will stain them yellow.

Yes, most (all?) tires will eventually stain VCT so you can plan around this. One suggestion would be to have a design whereby solid dark tiles are laid directly under your car and then continue the checkerboard elsewhere.

My wife and I have found that this darker outline is an easy target to hit when parking our cars. Our garage floor is about 8 months old and if there is any stain on the black tiles we can't see it.

Some people have purchased large floor mats which they leave under their cars and others put up with the staining and use various cleaners to remove most of it.

Hot, sticky high performance tires are the worst.

When our cars were winter stored I slipped some slices of carpet remnant under each tire but now that the weather is warmer and we regularly drive our Miatas I don't bother with any precautions.

I've asked this before, but haven't had a good response. Here in my area, we have about a 1" lip from the lower section of the garage floor (where you park) up to the surrounding area of the floor (storage area's, etc). Basically for runoff I assume.

How can you finish this area and have it look good if you do VCT on the floor? Haven't quite seen a good solution for that.

When it comes to garage flooring, I am a firm believer that you et what you pay for. There are a couple of products that are less expensive and a handful of product that are more expensive than the garage floor tile you mentioned.

Daytona and Daytona Coin tiles from Sport Court are very similar in appearance and performance to the product you were looking at. The price is a little less expensive at $2.89 per square foot. http://www.garagefloor.com/garage-floor-tiles-overview.htm

You can also use garage floor mats s a less expensive alternative to garage floor tiles. At prices as low as $1.50 a square foot they can be an affordable and attractive solution. I had the BLT coin garage floor mats in my garage until we sold our home. http://www.jnkproducts.com/floor_protection.htm
